My new "Boaterma"
A Capas Panama straw "boater" that I took the red-blue guard's band off of and added a black pleated puggaree. I call it "The Boaterma." More in Boater Faction.
Ladies and Gentlemen, THE BOATERMA
I never cared for the Panama straw boaters because I considered it a poor substitute for a real boater. Recently, however, I started to think of them in a new light. With the traditional red & blue guard's band, they look like a poor man's boater, sure. But...
This shorpy.com photo here
that skyvue posted in another thread inspired me today. Click on the image to see it all the terrific detail.
Isn't that something? Anyway, I was inspired by the sharp-looking guy squatting next to the larger gentleman in the uniform on the left, and that pork...
I believe that's a Milan straw pork pie, here's another shot of it. Someone around here recently posted on that looked really close to that but a different color, with the same shape and a similar pleated pug. I think it was CRH.
I doubt the milans are officially licensed or that they even have a model name. That's probably just the name Henry the Hatter chose to sell them under. But yeah, I'm sure the Chairman would not approve.
Shushan's probably has the best variety of any online stores I've found. They have striped ones similar to the one above. On a vintage hat they might stick out as looking too "new" though.
I'm not sure if there's a special name for the hooks. Usually they're just called "hooks." [huh] You...
Not that I know of, and I've looked, although I didn't do an exhaustive search. There's always puggarees. Less fancy, but not without precedent, like this old Cavanagh.
A bigger photo would be nice because I can't make it out too well. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a pug attached like that before, with the overlap in the front rather than on the left side where a ribbon usually goes, but I think I like it.
It's all about self-esteem. They don't want the hat wearers to make the non-hat wearers feel bad about themselves because of their non-hat-wearingness. Either that or they're afraid that students will carry concealed weapons under them.[huh] Or drugs. Or perhaps some weapon-drug hybrid that...
The weather looked iffy today, so I wore my Pinzano Milan.
I wasn't happy with the snap of the brim in the front, so shortly after taking that photo I steamed it and shaped it to give it more of a downswoop in the front and made the upswoop in the back a little more dramatic. Looks...
