    Reproducing Trousers, Questions

I've actually been looking, for exactly the same reason. White/cream flannel is nealy impossible to find. If you find it, snap it up! Cotton or linen duck (basically, a kind of canvas) trousers were pretty standard for summer wear. During a search, I stumbled on a potential source: it's still...

    Suspender buttons

Jack, Could you possibly post a picture of the inside of the waistband? It looks to me like the inner lining (don't know what the proper name is) isn't sewn down!

    TUX!

Yup! I know it seems funny but it's in most of the Esquire magazines, etiquette books and such from the 30s and 40s that I've read. I must say, I definitely prefer the look of patent leather but, in the interest of accuracy...

    TUX!

Have to disagree. Cap toe oxfords have always been an acceptable, albeit one step less formal, alternative to patent leather. They need to be highly polished and preferably have flat, black silk laces but they are an acceptable part of the kit.

    Reproducing Trousers, Questions

Attach the end of the mini ruler to the 9 cm mark on your regular ruler and stick a pin through the dot that corresponds to your waist measurement. The pin then goes through the cross in the middle of the pattern. On the edge of the pattern there are dots with numbers beside them. Line up the...

    Braces/Suspenders should match your ???

I think it's a personal taste thing. I love the blue suit/brown shoes and brown suit/black shoes looks. It's harder to pull off but it can look really good in my opinion. The idea that brown and black don't go together is an acquired concept. Brown tabs and black shoes don't bother me in the least.

    Braces/Suspenders should match your ???

I agree with Belly Tank. I always feel that too much matching looks too measured, anyway: like you bought a single outfit and always wear the same combination.

A Homburg? Me? In a Homburg?

Ok, I'm biased; I love homburgs but I think that's a very snazzy hat. As for the Godfather comments, just tell them that they made you an offer you couldn't refuse!

    Formal Wear Primer

The tube back is more to hide the buckle that most modern bowties have. Even the self-tied formal ties today have buckles. The old ones were sized.

    Formal Wear Primer

Zach, That sounds very classy. May sounds fine for a white dinner jacket. Do you know how to tie a bowtie? Self tied is always preferable; it's very easy to tie. It's the same knot you use for your shoelaces. If you can't find a bowtie, making one is dead easy (and you can size it to your...

    Formal Wear Primer

When cummerbunds were first being worn in the 30s, they were often burgundy, but always with a black bowtie. In fact, to wear a coloured bowtie would have been considered a faux pas but the mismatched bowtie/cummerbund would have been considered fashionably daring! They were most often worn with...

    Show us your TIES

I have to agree. Ebay is not the best way to get ties. They're the one thing that almost every vintage store has; even if they don't have anything else that's pre-1975. Antique stores often have them for less and there are still good finds to be had in thrift stores. Whenever I'm in a thrift...

    Formal Wear Primer

That's a major coup, Ray! Can't wait to see you wearing it. How are you accessorizing? Addendum on the flowers: in the 30s, carnations were the flower of choice. White was the most correct and red was a daring alternative. Early issues of Esquire and AA report (favourably) on fake red...
