I'm going to join the happy throng and say that your hat looks really great. Definitely one of the best hat-owner matches I've seen on the Lounge...and I've spent far too many hours looking, lately.

If memory serves, I think Optimos start at $550. Adventurebilt around the same. Art and a few other custom hatters are the good deals in this arena...around $300 as a rule.

What I can't figure out is why it looked so much better than most other Whippets I have seen...something about the large size made the dimensions that much more attractive?
It went so high because the color combination was GORGEOUS, the size was very large/very rare (and it seems like a lot of the high-roller hat guys are large sizes), and it looked to be in excellent condition. If you are a small to average hat size, a Whippet is certainly doable.
Yes...it's important to be able to leave nice hats for other people. Collection mania is a disservice to people who are trying to get into hats - or anything else for that matter.
