Soaps tend to be more economical. You can go as cheap as $2 for something like Williams, or get a high-end soap for $7-12 a puck. Either one should give you at least 100 shaves, and will have the two important things canned products generally lack: lubrication and water.
I think the danger is really overblown. I started about nine months ago, and in that time I have cut myself exactly twice, and never deep enough to draw blood. Every time I have shaved with a cartridge razor (also exactly twice) I have cut myself.
You might be interested in trying a DE...
Check your local antique store. Mine had them all in a coffee tin marked "$5 ea." Most were pretty gaudy, but I found a nice plain gold-colored one and a set of matching cufflinks for an additional $2.50.
I like the color/pattern combo, and I really like the tie. I can get passable knots, but never quite right.

That was my thinking as well...when I lived in Germany I did all my laundry by hand. I would imagine that the dryer does far more damage to clothing than wringing and twisting would. Same for the iron; a shirt spends much less time under the iron than being abraded in the dryer.
