    Don't emulate this look!

Oh Schreck! I must say, however; I saw far fewer badly-dressed people in Germany than I do in the USA.

You argued with a postmodernist in Berkley? Brave man! :-)

Help me mourn the loss of my 1930's vanity

Wow...my best friend's sister had one very similar to that; I believe she got it from her grandmother.

should stores charge for plastic bags?

When I lived in Germany I had no difficulty adjusting to the "bring your own bag" system. I had a cotton sack that I always carried in my satchel, and it took up almost no space. Just as easy to leave a couple in the trunk of your car all the time.

What does one wear with a leather jacket?

Stinchcomb, is that a brass telescope in the background?

Take it off!!! (Let's hear what you think, ladies.)

I would have suggested bringing it to her tactile attention, repeatedly if necessary :-)

USA Members: I Need Your Help.

B&N in Tanasbourne, OR had it in the Men's Interest section. Looked a bit funny hidden behind skin mags, so I moved it to the front.

    Staged war photos

The famous photo of the Soviet flag being raised over the Reichstag falls into this category.

What does one wear with a leather jacket?

Hmm...brown fedoras with jackets seems to be a common theme; I may have to think about getting one at some point.

    Hat sightings in Japan

If a person interested in all things Chinese is a Sinophile, would a person interested in Japan be a Nippophile?

What does one wear with a leather jacket?

That makes sense to me; I've never liked the feel of sneakers much, and haven't worn them since middle school. I don't think I would have thought to pair a leather jacket with a tie. I may have to try that someday. I work in a school, and to my knowledge I'm the only one that wears a tie...

What does one wear with a leather jacket?

The general public is obviously not the best guide in such matters, but the only leather I have seen lately is on bikers, and the only other reference that comes to my mind is aircrew. What do you typically wear with your flight jackets, bomber jackets, or other leather? I'd love to hear your...

    New Dollar Coin Out Thursday

I think what makes the $1 coin truly practical is a companion $2 coin, or at least that's how it seemed to me when I was living in Germany. That, and the 20 and 50 cent coins, which seemed more practical than quarters. Of course, I really like the Swiss 5 Franc coin, too, but I heard so many...

New Ladies and Gents Step Forward

Suppose I should... I wandered in here by way of http://www.straightrazorplace.com. I've been lurking for a month or so. Two trends in my life have intersected lately...growing disgust with an increasingly consumerist, plastic and digital world took a new turn when I decided to pick up a...

My GF wants to start wearing hats, but thinks she can't unless she owns several.

    Question for trained eyes

Picture as promised: These trousers are some of the few I've found that are sufficiently long, so I actually can wear them at my waist.

How did you start wearing hats?

It rains constantly in the Pacific Northwest, but for some reason only tourists (and particularly Californians) carry umbrellas, or so goes the popular mythology. My everyday hat used to be one of these: I love that hat; it's marvelously functional, completely waterproof and breathable, and...
