I'm wearing my derby from now through the weekend in honor of the Kentucky Derby. If you like a special reason to wear your derby, here's a good one!
Anybody interested in trying to create a "calendar" of appropriate days / weeks to wear certain types of hats? I don't really have the hat...
Don't know your location, but today here in Dallas the weather was such that I just put away my black shirts until cool weather returns in, if we are lucky, October. 5 minutes outside and you notice the difference. I doubt I'll be wearing any black hats until then here either. But I don't have...
Ascot vs Ivy
I don't know the history, but basically the ascot is the "derby" of the ivy cap style. It has a molded shape crown vs the ivy "lay flat on the table" shape. Most ascots are made of wool. There are also straw ones for summer, and leather ones. The leather ones are popular with...
Thanks for the advice, Art!
They got so rough by me making another mistake, water soaking and wet scrubbing them. Now I know about alcohol and naptha. But you're right of course, 320 gets there soon enough. I don't yet understand about the core of the felt, or why things got worse using 800...
Just ran this experiment!
Two days ago I bought some 150 grit and 320 grit thin 4"x6" foam pads, sort of sandpaper replacement things, in the paint section at HD. They were made by Norton, called "3X" or something. I'm not talking about those soapbar sized sponge things, these are thinner than...
I would have guessed that a very light color felt was more important in keeping a cooler head than light weight (thinner felt). Does thin felt really make much difference? Wouldn't a couple air holes in any felt do better than the thinnest felt without them? Does the light hat / dark hat notion...
Dark gray too please!
YES. That top photo, from that angle, the Open Road has a "softened Homburg" look. Never thought about it that way before. Anyway, you've nailed it.
The next time you have the dark gray one one, remember to take a photo for us please!
Joel: Maybe Stetson does use powder on dark hats. I have a light Stetson, and I know what the powder looks like and how it reacts to a hat brush. This wasn't powder. My guess is there was an aftermarket dye job somewhere before I got it. Looked great, too!
Bogie: I'm glad to hear it. I've got...
Joel: There may be more going on than meets the eye here. I got it at the Stetson outlet store. It may have been dyed by a retailer at customer request or...who knows. So I can't blame Stetson, I don't know enough.
Bailey I can blame, I bought that one at a western store off the shelf as new...
John: I'm not sure what you're asking. We're talking about what Wolfmanjack and RBH call "softening", which is removing the stiffener from the felt. I'm not sure "softening" is a good description of the results I got. The felt is less stiff but not softer. I wondered if people understood what I...
I hesitate since these are just the hats I have, and people may start slagging off on specific brands. But anyway:
- 1 black western Bailey "5x" Razer model (new)
- 1 brown Stetson Temple (new)
- 1 brown Stetson Pinnacle (new)
For fun here's pics. I've been busy going Western to fedora...
I have fur felt hats (dark brown and black, and maybe others) that bleed dye when they get wet. I want to wear them in the rain. I want them to not dye whatever they touch when they are wet:mad: They also stain the hatband ribbon:mad: At first I thought it was just one cheap one, but now I see...
Besdor has a wealth of experience, and I defer to his knowledge. I searched on FL for personal experiences people had with these hats, and found little to go by. The main thing I consistently heard was they had good felt. So I had, and still have to some extent, hope that these Lagomarsino hats...
I believe you are right.
Wolfmanjack, I think alcohol, naptha / white gas, and also water do some damage to leather sweatbands. It's obvious immediately after treatment that they are different than when they went it. How much damage, and how permanent it is, seems to vary *tremendously*...
Denatured alcohol now tested
I couldn't stand not trying the standard advice here on FL that if you want to soften hats, most stiffener is shellac based and alcohol will dissolve it. So I bought 2 gallons of denatured alcohol at HD and got to work. I soaked each (of 5) hats for about 15...
Stuff it
Take it to a taxidermist and have it stuffed. Maybe have antlers or horns added. Hang over fireplace. Sit in easy chair smoking pipe, with dog at side,
Patience
I can tell you more in a few days. I will receive a Lagomarsino Homburg tomorrow (I hope) and a derby a couple days later. At that point all I will be able to report will be visible fit, finish, and construction (and how the transaction went).
I assume you are in UK, not US. My...
