Front Pinch
Hi,
I've always thought that the front pinch came about as an accident of soldiers handling their hats by the crown. I've seen many a pre-1900 photo where only a few soldiers sport a front pinch on their covers, whilst the majority have no dents at all, just the center crease...
Hi,
Ah yes. That's the thread I refer to as the 'Gene and a can of glue' thread. lol
And, it does work! I admit to copying that process myself once in a while. :D
Also, the 'pull the sweatband and turn the hat around' trick to fix bad spots at the top of a front pinch. That's where...
Hi,
Looks like a 2-ligne ribbon which is about the same width as a single cord on the C'boy hats. If that makes any sense to anyone else.....
It's one sweet-looking hat!
I only have one roll of 2-ligne ribbon and it's white - so one woould have to dye it to get what one wants. I've...
y'all got me
Hi,
Well, I just took a little trip to Confused Land. I started reading and thought that the original hat at the top of the thread was one I had missed watching a recent auction for! lol
Later!

Hi,
And, Toht's outfit just adds to that sad and silly situation. It seems that every time the image starts to fade from the collective mind, someone puts out a movie that just refreshes the tired old stereotype. :(
But, his hat is still cool. I don't yet have a black hat, but I would...
Hi,
Ah, but this is an adventure serial. The heros *have* to be super-men, so the villains have to be super-sinister!
And, you have to admit, that Toht *is* that. I mean, even his coat hanger looks like some modernized medieval torture device!
Usually members of the Geheim Staatspolzei wore...
Hi,
Yes, I was watching that one from the day it showed up. It's one of my programmed daily searches, for a Stetson 100 OR.
By my calculations, if it were a new one at current prices, it's a Stetson 800. Still, this one went for more than I would have figured.
Actually, while I still...
Hi,
I've only been following this for two years now. I was going to get in on it at some point, but have since given up on it.
I have to point out the irony of the situation vs. the hat's model name, though. It's certainly living up to it! lol
Later!

Mr. Death
Hi,
As I called him. His name is a take-off on Todt, which is the German word for death. Pronounced the same, spelled differently.
I, too, always thought that his hat was off the same block and by the same hatter as Indy's hat - just finished a bit more dressy with a wider...
Hi,
I'm not into the online photo thing, at least not at this point in time anyway. I had been a couple times, but had issues with the hosting places, and gave up.
This is one of those things with the two half-domes made from aluminum and mounted on a 2-way screw. The back half moves to...
Heat does the trick
I ran into this a tad too often, so I watched for a Hot Block at a reasonable price. That solves the problem. I heat the block up to around 140 degrees F, steam the hat around the circumference, then place it on the hot block and switch it off.
It takes an hour or so...
Hi,
The hat makers, for the most part, still include feathers with hats. They're mostly dyed chicken feathers, but there are plenty of nice-looking ones. Most folks don't want the feathers, so when a hat is sold and the feather is unwanted, it is removed and placed in a tray on the counter...
Good one!
Hi,
I polled my Herefords this morning, and they unanimously voted that horsehide is absolutely the best without question!
Now they're off tipping over burger joint signs.....
lol
Stan
Hi,
Yes. It most certainly can.
Also, the color can make a huge difference as well. A slight change in shade can also make a huge difference.
I've been messing around with changing ribbons. I'm onto this kick of picking up unloved hats for little money these days, then cleaning them...
Hi,
So, are we talking 9 to 16 ligne, then or is it 6 to 12 or is it over 4 but under 19?
I just had to ask! lol
I gotta get something rigged to post photos one of these days. I have a few hats that fit this thread. I'm fond of 6 to 12 ligne myself when I'm not using 4 (which have to...
Hi,
You ever drive a pre 1920 car? Especially ever try and *stop* one??
Brakes? We don't need no stinking brakes!
And, you're in luck! You ain't got any!
At best they had a single band brake on the driveshaft. At worst, they used the horse drawn wagon method and pushed blocks...
Hi,
You mean food as in animal hair which is pretty much what a hat is to a moth?
Yes, the little baby bugs eat the hair itself, then turn into adult moths and fly away.
I wonder if they have enough on the ball to come *back* to the same hat to lay their own eggs??
I have a few hats...
Hi,
Well, from a hat style POV, a Trilby has so little material in the crown, that it can take only a center crease styling, and a very shallow one at that. Then, the brim is well shorter than 2 inches, more like 1.5" and under with the rear turned up so sharply that it forms almost a 180...
I wear a red hat at times
Hi,
I have a late 50's vintage Stetson Open Road in red with white 4 ligne ribbon and edge binding. It's restyled as a Stratoliner clone, although it was a true OR when I got it.
I wear it to NC State and Carolina Hurricanes games. Oh, and I carry a Hurricanes...
Hi,
Well, I wear a Cooper A2 these days. I figure it's Close Enough for me.
I used to wear a Schott 4-in-1 that was a sort-of amalgamation of an A2 and a G1 and probably sixteen other styles. I wore that one for 20 years as a motorcycle jacket until I switched to ballistic nylon that...
