Hi,
I saw that but skipped it because I figured it was a stingy brim. Looks like the ribbon is taller than the brim is wide, and the widest ribbon I think of would be 2", so I think the brim is no wider, even accounting for some optical tricks from a wide angle camera lens.....
If the...
Hi,
Yes, the steam should be clean. Unless....
Unless there's something in the water that boils at a temperature lower than water. The things I'm sitting here thinking about off the top of my head that boil at a point lower than water should not be in your tap water, though.
So, the...
Hi,
Pretty much, if the porkpie fits your face shape, then it's simply a matter of picking the rest of the outfit to match the hat. :)
In other words, if it looks good to you in the mirror, then it probably *is* good! :D

Hi,
I also don't go well with stingy brims. I really need a 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 brim and can't really go shorter than 2".
I have this nice mid-grey Cavanagh with Cav Edge that sports a 1 1/2 brim and I wish it were at least 2" as I could actually wear it if it had.
It was a similar story to...
Ha! lol
I sing that quite often when working out in the hay field!
That's not a crawler job, of course. There are three other wheel tractors here besides the crawler and the lawn riding mower! :D

Hi,
Amazing collection, for sure! I can't actually imagine going after anything as single-mindedly as that. :D
I just counted my 'collection'. Heck, I hate to actually use that word now!
I have:
12 felt hats, 10 vintage and 2 custom-made.
8 straw hats, 6 vintage and 2 modern...
Hi,
Ok. This is now going to be the Farm Equipment Open Road Guild. Between brushhogs and bulldozers, we've got it covered!
Not to mention the Deer puns a few posts back. Well, *here* is a Deere for y'all!
Do I need the lol lol lol Icons?? lol
Anyway, here is a Stetson brand 4x...
Hi,
A series of steamings and working with your fingers will fix that telescope crown nicely. I've reworked a number of western hats with boxtops and such into gamblers that way. Yours should be easier as the felt is thinner. :)
If you dampen the brim with some distilled water out of a...
Hi,
Ah! Know them both. Almost took a job years ago out in Lizzard Lick. I'm actually in Lillington, South of Raleigh some 30 miles. I put Raleigh, as practically no one would know where Lillington is....

Hi,
I tend to think of anything before, say, 1965 as vintage. Mostly because the mid-1960's saw a marked change in what hats were, both in style and in construction.
There is also the school of calling them out by decade, as in 1950's vintage or 1930's vintage, etc. It seems that every...
Hi,
Ah! It all comes together now. I also thought that the 15 posts was for both PM's and Pix. Just PM's, then. I'll have to remember that for next time.

Bushhogs are bad
Hi,
I mean, look at what one does to the bushes! How about what it does to some poor critter in the field of brush that didn't run fast enough? Any hat has no chance at all! Nice fix on that hogged OR, BTW.
Also, don't run over it with a bulldozer, either. The only fortunate...
Hi,
Well, it's sewn in. The process isn't terribly difficult, but is a bit time consuming unless one has a specialty sewing machine that does this.
One has to cut the new sweatband to fit, and trim the reed for the ferrule to make the flare (which helps greatly to align the thing), then...
Hi,
Well, I cannot speak for current, or even recent, production. I don't have an OR newer than around 1960 or so.
However, that OR I'm wearing in my avatar, the one that is now missing it's writing on the sweatband (I looked this morning and it's completely faded away at this point), is my...
Hi,
And welcome!
Just rapid-fire another few posts into this thread, and you'll have your 15 and be good to go! Just reply 'howdy back' to each of us and that ought to do it! lol

Hi,
Yes. Tap water won't hurt the teakettle beyond leaving somewhat dirty looking water to be rinsed out (unless you boil it dry that is, then you'll get a coating inside the kettle).
In a steamer, the junk will coat the heating elements, leading to decreased output and even burned out...
Hi,
I presume you're referring to a snap brim. Hang/store those with the brim up all the way around, as that's the natural position for the brim felt as determined by the flange when the hat was made.
I have a couple with nearly flat (slightly up in the back, slightly down in the front) brims...
Hi,
Well, it doesn't matter all that much to me. I have a few Stetson Open Roads and a few Resistols and other makers that were OR clones from the get-go. I even have a couple custom-made hats, including a VS, that were spec'd as OR clones (with deep diamond creases).
I've always figured...
Reshaping Observations
Hi,
The problem with reshaping this style of hat is, as Gene points out, you wind up left with these sort-of 'racing stripes' down the center of the crown.
They're not so bad, and most folks aren't tall enough to see them when such a hat is on my head. It's just...
