So does anyone know if any have ever shown up on ebay/other auction sites or in a museum or for that matter has anyone every seen one of these in person?
Wondering who the oil men/cattle barons were who bought these! That was a heck of a lot of money back then!
Thanks for sharing this with us all. I've been wondering what the status of the disposition of the company was. Too bad there wasn't a new owner to keep it going, but at least the equipment and materials are going to the few remaining hatters keeping the tradition alive.
I suppose we have to...
Hmmm....in my experience the Life magazines up through at least the 1950's/early 1960's have many hat ads. Now some of the ads are smaller size and are sometimes concentrated more in the back of the magazine. Especially from the smaller companies.
How many issues have you looked at?
You can...
Thanks for sharing the video. I have a few of the Locke hats from the 60's/70's and they were better hats than many of the period. They had quite good quality leather sweats for the era.
I've been using my local Western supply stores for years for such things. I try to spend a little bit at them just to help them stay in business.
If you live in the West or are in or near an area that is more rural or has farming then there are usually many such places to be found.
Too bad the damn moths made it look like it was hit by a shotgun blast! Reminds me of a Buster Keaton mod hat. Keaton once described buying Stetsons by the gross and turning them into his costume hat for his movies. This looks like one.
Good info Gentlemen.
Most likely someone else makes the boxes for both outfits (perhaps the same maker)--not clear from their websites to me if they are the makers or just sellers. Could probably have larger sizes made. Might be a minimum order though so unless there was high demand may not...
Does anyone know where they get their box material? I assume it is some kind of paperboard (cardboard) that is cut and folded to form boxes.
If the box doesn't have tight sealing at the joint and cover (lid) then moths could get in. Sure would be interesting to know more on how they build...
Yeah, I doubt the seller's claim. Of course it's possible the ribbon could have been replaced--though we know not likely. Even if Eastwood gave someone that hat without it being a movie hat that would make it worth something to. I wish sellers would not make statements without having proof...
Seller claimed the hat was a gift from Eastwood to the person he got it from and could be the actual movie hat. Of course he probably can provide no proof of provenance, but it it could be established that it was indeed the hat then it would easily be worth thousands of dollars if not tens of...
"XXX" has been used by Stetson/Resistol and others probably since the late 70's/early 1980's to denote wool---not sure of the exact date. Prior to that Double-X "XX" was used for wool content at least till mid to late 70's. Those old "XX" are also nicer than modern XXX...
But yes, "XXX" used...
I doubt the open crown hat has ever been that popular with the hat buying public as something to buy and shape yourself. Sure, a few are sold that way, but not the majority. It was primarily offered such that the hat retailer could then custom block the hat in the store to suit the buyer's...
Great stuff and definitely from a better time to be a kid IMHO. :eusa_clap
Just imagine the trouble a kid would get into these days with having anything like that! There's been plenty of recent stories about kids being suspended from school for really doing nothing but being a harmless kid...
Mine was shipped on the 23rd and I was beginning to wonder if it was every going to arrive as there were no updates on either the Australia Post or USPS web sites. Finally early this morning the USPS web site reported it was at the post office distribution center in my city. Wasn't clear it...
Thanks for sharing it though I seen it before. There's a lot of other great hat stories in those old Life's and also the Saturday Evening Post and many others to be found from the golden age. There's one about the "hat check" backlash that was used in the Hatless Jack book that's a good read...
