Having just seen a Stetson 100 listed for $1600.00 and many more so-so hats routinely going in excess of $200.00, its time for the madness to stop. I propose we all cease buying, bidding and even thinking about hats for 6 months. Enough hats go unsold, and mayhap we'll see the prices head the...
I would suggest a big factor in these decisions is the legacy attached to the name.
When the company is controlled by the founder/family, then they fight tooth and nail to keep the name & company alive. Once control is transferred outside the family, then the name becomes less important. The...
I can only speak for the US.
I agree that etiquette can be limited to smaller groups to a degree. But to be etiquette it has to involve people outside your own personal circle of family and friends. The only examples I can think of where hat etiquette may actually exist are in religious sects...
They don't always. If you walk around doffing your hat to ladies, even if you mean it to show respect, how many are going to understand that gesture? If you are following an established etiquette, then most are going to understand your meaning. Outside of that its hit or miss. That's the point...
How one chooses to show respect is a personal choice which may or may not coincide with an established etiquette.
If a person sneezes and you say "God bless you" or something similar, you have followed the accepted etiquette. If you take it a step further and hand that person a tissue, no...
To answer the original poster... Yes hat etiquette is obsolete. There may be pockets, such as the military, where forms are practiced. However amongst the general public, it is officially dead.
It does not matter that there are folk who keep the traditions alive. To be etiquette a behavior...
To answer the initial poster, no it would not be. Without the hat the movie would have been just as good and just as initially popular. However the fedora was made an integral part of the character and is now associated in the minds of many with that character. It does not matter that the look...
What'd I wear? Nothing. I went to the movies tonight and as I started to drive off I realized I forgot my hat. Prior to tonight, I can't remember the last time I left the house without a hat. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.
The "who cares what anyone else thinks" is a frequent comment around here. I have always found it interesting since we are talking about hats that are designed to be fashion accessories and the entire purpose of fashion is to inspire a reaction in others.
A scientific study determining the stress levels of metals used in a spacecraft makes sense. For a fedora? Not really. A fedora by its very nature is a fashion accessory and therefore its functionality is of secondary importance. The emotional response the user has to the fedora is the primary...
Truthfully
Its neither. Beaver is about status. Beaver is purportedly stronger and more weather resistent which is basically irrelevent. The vast majority of us who spend $300 - $1000 on a beaver fedora aren't buying it for daily wear. The hat is far more likely to be babied then expected...
I doubt she is but some of the extreme advice given here, if followed, could easily cause a rift in his family and that could have dire financial consequences for him.
I'm older but sentiments do not enter into my opinion. If someone is supporting you then risking that financial support over a hat is stupid at any age. When you can pay your own freight is the time to man up.
If you have fully emancipated yourself financially, then some of the previous advice may make sense. If not, then it probably isn't the time to rock the boat. Wear your hat when you are away but accept her wishes the few weeks you are at home. After all its just a hat.
Hurting a comeback? No. Firstly hats don't need to make a comeback. They are doing just fine. Obviously what was meant is a comeback of more fashionable hats such as a fedora. There will likely never be a comeback for fedoras. In today's society and, absent drastic social change, the foreseeable...
In order to stem the tide of criticism, I asked the US government to scrub any offensive language from my post. Here is the redacted version.
Walked ---- a vintage clothing store and, after greeting me, the clerk asks if I --- a ----------. After responding --, --- ----- ---- an -----...
