Ask a question, get an answer

I have a number of hats with liners, some post 50's. I've not noticed any greater rot percentages between lined and unlined. Personally I think how the hat was stored is the most relevant factor. Did it spend decades in an attic or garage freezing and unfreezing? But I'm no leather expert and my...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Yes and no. A Ford Mustang is an iconic vehicle. And I can understand personal tastes or brand loyalty leading to a preference over a similar car such as a Camarro or Firebird. But even in Mustangs the upgraded (302, 429, Shelby) or rarer (convertible) models sell for much more the base sedan...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

The hats with fancy names are the entry level hats. Why folk are obsessed with them eludes me. But why folk are obsessed with Stetson fedoras in general makes no sense to me. There is no discernible quality difference between vintage hats from the major makers. And no one can tell what brand you...

    The Dobbs Diner...

Coupla' Dobbs Click the image for the larger version. First is a 1950's Dobbs Forty. Some wag cut the Guild Edge off. :eeek: Also the hat appears to have been a factory second... had I known these things I wouldn't have paid what I did. Oh well, it is still a nice hat. Second hat...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Given what you have to spend to get a new hat anywhere near that quality and without a cav edge, I still consider it a bargain. But I agree $300 is not cheap.

This was actually my purchase, its sitting in my apartment now (just delivered)... dying to go home and tear open the box. My text conversation to the woman in my house... Me: How's the box look? Woman: Square Me: Please rotate the box 1/4 turn every 15 minutes to ensure the sun does not...

    ADAM ALLEY

Attended the huge Brimfield antique show this weekend. A good number of hats but mostly in sad shape. I did manage to acquire a number of 1930's Adam Hats testimonial pictures. The most interesting one is Ted Healy founder of the Three Stooges.

    Is my head shrinking?

The answer should be obvious. Do your existing hats no longer fit? If they are now too large then something about you has changed. If not then the new brands you tried just run larger.

Open Crown Stetsons: A Call (Plea) to Retailers!!

Personally I would go with "shrunk". To me taper implies an intentional styling. What you are describing is a loosely felted hat that can't stand up to heat or wetness without shrinking.

Open Crown Stetsons: A Call (Plea) to Retailers!!

Sounds like the hat is good for some more extreme styles. I've seen a few examples of where the fedora crown is smashed almost flat. It had and interesting look, suitable for out in the speakeasies but not the office. Wish I had a photo as an example, but I don't.

Open Crown Stetsons: A Call (Plea) to Retailers!!

By high end I don't mean Optimo 1000 territory. I simply mean a quality hat without compromises or obvious quality control issues. The market for more expensive hats is small, but if it costs you nothing to have a presence, why would you not? A no compromises $300 hat bearing the Stetson name...

Open Crown Stetsons: A Call (Plea) to Retailers!!

Some things I just don't understand. Maybe there's more to it then I guess. I fully understand why Hatco chooses to produce low-end hats. That's the market today. What I don't understand why they can't also produce high end hats as well. There doesn't seem to be any initial costs or extra costs...

Possible origin of the use of X's for price/quality level designation

Interesting but unless the usage of x's on hats can be traced by consistent use to the 1500's, doubtful. X is a common replacement symbol. Has been for a long time. Most likely marketing liked the idea of using an X over trying to list percentage of finer fur.

OK, THIS fedora/baseball cap is a travesty of justice…

Oooh its different better mock it. shakeshead The hat definitely has a military inspiration. Being more utilitarian than the more foppish standard fedora, I could see where something like this could fit in. I think it'd be interesting in outdoor/active/sporting activities where folk still...

    Alphonse Capone's Hat

People store fat differently. I lost some weight and my hat size went down, so it was true for me. And no I wasn't morbidly obese. I also imagine where in the range you start from matters. If one is a small 7 3/8 and then gains weight, they may stay in the 3/8 range. However if the were already...

How do folks react to your hat wearing?

One thing that seems obvious to me is that there is clearly more at work here than just people reacting to the hat. I've no doubt that random people think I look like a dork/Indy/whatever but I've not encountered any who felt empowered enough to openly mock me (outside of ribbing from...

    Alphonse Capone's Hat

Obesity rates do, fat people tend to have fat heads. No doubt in my mind that the average head size in the US has grown, if for no other reason then to keep pace with the average waistline.

    Alphonse Capone's Hat

A Capone hat in a museum was a Borsalino so, assuming he had brand loyalty, I'd say that was a gray Borsalino he's sporting in your photo. However absent a successful séance, its all just a guess. http://www.myalcaponemuseum.com/id175.htm[
