Hey great idea, Matt. Why don't a few of us meet at Art's shop on a set date to review the hats and fill out anonymous votes, and then we'll count them up and see how the GH stacks up?
Kev:
You are always in the know, my friend.
Saw Art yesterday to pick up the hats and to hang out with him for a while in the hat shop. Always a pleasure hanging with Art--he's such a class guy and easy friend, chatting away on all things hats while he plays around in the hat shop...
Agreed 100%. I have no problem with Fedora for sure except the radical capitalist comes out in me when one assumes that a product is overpriced because of some relation to the cost of materials. The hat business is not a cost plus business, it is market based, and defintely not high volume low...
What a great thread and discussion by all!
Fedora, what do you think the western hatters pay for those high end, silky soft yet western stiff 100% beaver bodies from the famous company in portugal? The ones used for custom western hats. I've heard about $300.
Thanks!
G
I too have been waiting to see these colors. A couple of questions, Kevin:
1. Is that Toffee signiture the felt he uses for hats that he sells through that high society clothing store in San Fran? I hear those hats sell for $700+ retail there.
2. That's it? Graham had told me that he...
LOL Kev. I'll say no more.
Actually, I looked back to the hat of Matt in the photo with the high crown, and I was reminded of something that Andykev might have told me at Art's: you have to get used to seeing yourself in a higher crown or wider brim if you are used to a lower crown. That...
I was just kidding of course. It's a fine hat!
And I don't think there's a problem for expressing contentment and appreciation for fine hats and fine people. That's why we're here--for the love the game.
Regards,
G
I love that fine balance between hat-to-face dimensions and confidence. Some hats with high crowns that seem a bit conspicuous on a person's head, given their facial and body types....can look good in person due his confidence in wearing the hat and his personality.
From the photos, I'd...
Fedoralover:
That is a plug! You shill! What's that other word I was called? Tramp? Trump? Troll, that was it!
I too saw Art's panama body, while he was in the process of blocking. Nice montecristi! Looked to be about 900-1000 weaves per square inch. A few areas with some...
I've heard about Michael Harris as well, and it is a pity that he disparages other hat makers. Anyone who does that misses the point of supporting a dying craft. There's no point if you're good.
But for the spleef? No worries. Perhaps for $1500 you get a nice custom hat, a pound of Oregon...
About that underwelt, I do like it, and it adds body to the brim, but I'm not sure it looks much like a cavanaugh edge, expect from the profile of the brim. From the top, the stitch gives it away.
If I was in the hat business and had demand for cavaugh like brims, I might buy a few felts...
Well folks,
I made it to the USA on Labor Day, dropped my gear off at the hotel, and went off to see Art's hat shop...and lo and behold, it turned into a FL event. After a nice lunch and a couple of drinks with Andykev, jamespowers, wingnut and the man Art himself, we went over to check out...
Interesting. Here's the sweat and liner from the group of Borsos on e-bay. they all have the perforations at the back of the hat, near the ribbon. Brown sweat. Could this really be from the 30s? Also interesting is that the hat store from which these come were in Sofia...Bulgaria, most...
Hi Havershaw:
Just for the record, from you're home in Mesa, you can probably hear the crowd at Sun Devil stadium in the fall in Tempe, right next door to you.
It's pretty hot in Arizona. Can you wear your felt hats in the summer? Thankfully, no humidity, so it is definitely possible...
Hi Havershaw:
thanks. Your comments echo everything I've heard before. Good thing our hat sizes are different! I'm just watching the auction for now, though one my size is indeed there.
Did you wear one of those nice fedoras of yours to see the Sun Devils smoke UTEP thursday?
G
Comrades:
Some of you may have seen a number of new, but vintage borsos on ebay, and perhaps some of us might want to bid on one or more of them.
With all the good talk here about vintage felts, what made those vintage borso felts so good and soft? Are they wild hare, beaver or what...
Very nice hats! It still amazes me how someone could have so many outstanding hats and not struggle everyday on which hat to wear.
I also have figured you out after seeing your photos in the nice vintage suits and cool hats: you're really Russell Crowe, aren't you? Should have worn one...
Shantung is the old spelling of Shandong, a province in North Eastern China. The straw that comes from there is thick and cheap and often coated with a clear laquer so the hat can be mass produced cheaply with auto presses.
G
Hi Art:
What can you tell us about the felt you use for the custom hats? I saw from your website that you are not sure of the blend composition. Are these vintage felts?
Regards,
G
