Cavanagh edge question

Just a point I want to make about Borsalnos, it came up before.

If you look at the liner of this hat you see it says Alessandria. This is not the style of the hat. This is not the style of any hat Borsalino makes, nor does it reffer to the quality of the felt. It is the name of the city where Borsalino is headquartered and the name Alessandria is printed in all of their hats... at least all the ones I have seen that were sold on the US market.

I stand corrected, the only 2 underwelts I have seen are Gcollins and MK's.

About that underwelt, I do like it, and it adds body to the brim, but I'm not sure it looks much like a cavanaugh edge, expect from the profile of the brim. From the top, the stitch gives it away.

If I was in the hat business and had demand for cavaugh like brims, I might buy a few felts with an eye to managing risk and inventory.....why not have bodies made that met the following criteria:

1. Two common and cool colors likely to sell well
2. Bodies designed for the most common two hat sizes of hats sold
3. Bodies with one most common brim width, say 2-1/2?

Result would be that I keep inventory for 2 colors that could be made into one of two most common sizes in one brim length.

ALL my customers would not get a cavanaugh edge, but I'd be able to sell the ones I have to delight at least a subset of customers while managing my risk fairly well at the same time.

Ok, I went through the collection and found that I have two hats that are under welted. The first is the Royal Stetson and the second is my Richman Brothers Hand Finish. I like the Stetson but I think the Richman Brothers hat is done much neater and less noticable. You could easily mistake it for a Cavanagh Edge if you didn't look under the brim.
I will see if I can get some pictures of the welted edges tomorrow. Art can vouch for both hats because he cleaned and reblocked both---that's why they are ready for prime time.

I like the Cav edge my self. I have a Royal Stetson and it has an over welt. It was one of my first vintage fedoras. I like that hat, but now that I know a little more about hats, I look at the over welt and it looks to me like some one wanted a cav edge and just flipped it up and stitched it down.

I have no under welts in my collection, but, if I found one, I'd buy it if it were my size and style.

I'll buy just about any hat from the 30's to 40's that is in my size and looks good on me.

Two of the three vintage hats I have (to date) are cav edged. I love 'em. Very classy look if you don't quite want the formality of a bound edge.

Stetson Mode Edge

I just saw one sell on ebaY for $87!!! I stopped bidding at $50. It looked like a nice hat, medium grey.

The Stetson Mode Edge is a very nice edge. It is a little thicker than that of the Borsalino and about the same thickness of the Dobbs Guild Edge. Very nice edge. I understand that the Stetson Selv Edge is a little thinner than the Mode Edge though. I only have one so I don't want to make a blanket statement without any comparison.
$87 is a bit steep but someone just wants one.

The current hats I have with this type of edge are,

4 Borsalinos; 1 Brown, 2 Grey, 1 Bone
1 Luca's; 1 blue
1 Stetson; 1 tan
2 Dobbs; 1 heavy and furry brown1930's, 1 Ugly 1960's

Three of the Borsys are pretty much consistant with how the edge is made, one of them has a more blended look.

The Luca's is from a custom hatter and the fold over is not as far, the felt is very stout, definately a winter hat.

The Stetson Mode edge folds over thicker than the other companies I have seen, that could be because the felt is a bit thicker than the Luca's.

The Dobbs has a furry testure and a more blended look like the one Borsy.
The 60's one is ugly.

Jamespowers, you mention Stetson selv edge in a previous post... I think I saw a hat that said selv edge before, please refresh my memory. Is it a cavanagh? another type of welt?

It is a cavanagh edge as far as I can tell. I do not have mine in front of me but from what I remember, it is a little thinner than the Mode Edge from Stetson.
Attached is a picture of a Selv Edge from an auction site. The edge is not readily noticable but it is what this hat has. All the Selv Edge hats I have seen are stingy brims so this makes me think they are a newer edge than the Mode Edge but I could be wrong. The hat pictured is supposedly from 1957 and the sweatband is black so I am not sure of the dating accuracy.

LOL LOL LOL No, that is not my hat, thank God , but it is an example of the Selv Edge. I don't know how well you can see it though. I looked at my Selv Edge and it is indeed a Cavanagh Edge but the transition between the edge and the brim is not as nice as the Mode Edge and when compared to the Borsalino well, let's just say there is a world of difference.
I might actually wear the hat pictured. It might be good for a few laughs. LOL LOL No, there is nothing wrong with that.
