Stick with the 40. Trust me. ELC's leather shrinks up with some sweat and rain. I have a 40 that now fits more like a 36 on me. Tight in the shoulders and when I zip it up it is pretty snug. The 40 looks more like a wartime fit. The 38 looks more like a modern fit. Go with what feels best...
Bottom line is the A2 fit the OP perfectly. Perhaps he just did not like the cut of that contract on his frame. Pretty simple really. The jacket would have changed and adapted to his body eventually if he had kept it. Leather is not static.
this jacket fits you fine. Trust me. You pass this one on and get a smaller size you will be kicking yourself 6-12 months from then. These jackets will shrink a bit. I have an ELC size 40 that now fits more like a 36-38 on me. I like the looser feeling than a tight jacket at first which...
well. I guess it all comes down to this. Are you wanting a zipper that works more than your pride of not having to pony up (not saying you should have to, but it is what it is. I can relate. I once lived in Malaysia and getting things shipped there from home was a nightmare to say the least)?
Hmmm, only differences I spot with my naked eye are the button collar closer in place of snaps and the button pocket flaps again in place of snaps. Hardly what I would label as "military" baggage of the a-2 iconic look. but to each their own.
Not "ALL" leather conditioners will darken leather. I use Eastman liquid leather. It will not darken and makes the leather feel soft and smell wonderful. Leather should not be conditioned regularly. Perhaps the only exception is if you say have a pair of boots that are regularly exposed to...
in that case, the only veg tanned leather I have ever touched that was as soft as chrome tanned leather can get is my Aero in Bill Kelso's victory horse hide. So its possible.
I used to own a Buzz Rickson RW. the hide was very soft where broken in and worn, but a little more vinyl feeling in...
Most Veg tanned leather starts out stiff and needs broken in to soften it up. Chrome tanned leather usually requires no such breaking in, but there always is the exception and that being Lost Worlds for chrome tanned, but probably because they use a thicker than normal hide for their jackets...
Due to Jimmy Fallon's not understanding, ha, my meaning.
I paid $1300 for my BK aero in victory hide. On their site, even with the current discount, the Dark Seal victory hide is about $1800 or so before shipping. So, I consider what I paid for a New Jacket in the Early Dark Seal Victory hide...
perhaps second hand I would agree. Mine was bought New for a little higher price. But, considering this hide is nearly extinct and what is left is close to $2000, I'd say this was a bargain.
I have a Victory Hide A2. The current cost on website is too high, but the one on Ebay? worth it. The hide is unlike anything I have ever handled before. So soft and pliable and rich. Perhaps there is it's equal out there, but my guess is its chrome tanned. This is veg tanned. Its amazing...
um, gonna have to strongly disagree with this.
A more correct statement would be, some leathers resist staining better than others. This all comes down to what finish is used (aniline, semi-aniline or pigment finish) as well as what tanning methods were used (veg or chrome).
