    Sleeves- Modern v. Vintage

There is a lot of variation in sleeve width of both vintage and modern coats. Furthermore the width at the cuff is somewhat independent of the width of the sleeve in general. That is, much like trousers, coat sleeves may be tapered, straight, or flared at the cuff. In any case the sleeve...

Help: Borsalino v Stetson size differance

Modern Borsalinos fit significantly more snugly than modern Stetsons. Vintage may be different.

To black tie or not to black tie

Black tie can always be worn after sunset, which is well before 6pm in the winter in many places. The 6pm rule was instated to ensure that it could be worn in the summer at all.

Does this fedora look too tall on me?

While I like the look of a fedora with the back of the brim turned up, I usually wear mine down for greater sun protection in back. I do try to turn them up at night but I often forget.

    Borsalino Beaver

I have two Borsalino hats: a soft travel fedora and a panama. Neither is a terrible hat; but both, in retrospect, were dreadfully overpriced for what they are.

    Homburg Hunt

I only vaguely remember that movie. But here and here are some wider brimmed homburgs. EDIT - sorry, I just noticed you had already seen Miller. Biltmore makes Homburgs in two brim sizes. Some retailers carry both, some one or the other. This is the wider version. I got the narrower...

    Fur felt types?

I would guess that buffalo felt would behave more like wool felt than like lagomorph or rodent fur felt.

    Stetson "Nostalgia"? (now with pics)

I just got a Nostalgia, size 7 1/2 ... and it is too large. Will it shrink? I have 2 other modern Stetsons in 7 1/2 and both fit fine, although neither fit well when new. I do not remember them being too large though, just inappropriately-shaped for my head -- l would need a long oval (at...

    Formal Wear Primer

If the event is truly formal (e.g. if you received a printed invitation that states "Black Tie"), stripes and velvet are both very wrong. (Have a look at blacktieguide.com if you haven't. Of course there is good information in this thread as well.) That issue aside, there is no need to remove...

    Formal Wear Primer

My dinner jacket has that material on the lapels. I have worn it with a grosgrain tie and thought it looked fine. On the other hand perhaps I should bid against you.

    Welcome to suits

I was not aware of the term "Valentino pocket", but here is a picture: Never mind. It doesn't work.

Do hats really need a liner?

What kind of hats are these, that are lined with plastic? Sounds very bad. EDIT - just checked a Stetson; lining feels like nylon to me. Never noticed on account of still having hair on top I guess. Anybody know for sure?

"Gay" was used to mean "lame" by the mid eighties if not before.

Cheesy and lengthy introduction by new member

Welcome. My opinion, which is only that, is that the wider brims suit you better -- particularly the gray fedora with its straight sides. A shame that it is too small. Good luck finding a similar one that fits better.

    The 1920 JAZZ SUIT

The fellow on the left in that picture, whom dhermann1 has identified as Charlie Ebbets, is wearing a morning coat. (The skirts of a frock coat are not cut away.)

Advice needed: Navy sport coat with Black pants

Dark gray pants are fine. Black pants are not.
