I swiped my avatar from this film's poster, but I'd never seen it until tonight. Uneven turf flick tries too hard to be a Runyonesque comedy. I expected more from Raoul Walsh, cast is okay except for Gail Russell, who acts like she knows what a forgettable picture it's going to be. Lotta good...
I think you might be able to track down a "donor hat" to salvage the liner/sweatband for the Adam. Post a WTB for the size, model and liner with pics, and perhaps the guys who scour the thrift shops can find a moth-eaten beater that you can cannibalize.
This is the finest hat I own. I rarely wear it, partly because I'm so protective of it and partly because it doesn't match up well with a lot of my duds. It's the only hat that retains the feather it came with; I think it's the original feather as the hat came to me in near mint condition. At...
I enjoy the Rathbone-Bruce stories, but the clumsy in-studio banter between Bruce and Bartel, particularly as they introduced the commercials, is a big distraction. Plus the Mutual series perpetuated the Hollywood depiction of Watson as a dimwit.
Now that the the FFIII Stratoliner project is officially dead, I have some saved-up hat money on my hands. I'd love to read some first-impressions from you guys after you receive your first-run Powells; a hat in that color and dimensions would complement my wardrobe nicely.
Today called for something a little more business-like, so I chose this Adam Pacesetter. Adam wasn't a top-of-the-line hat, but they did wonderful things with their ribbons:
Another thin ribbon today, a Resistol OR clone in Silverbelly. The info sticker is mostly gone but the model name ends in "er" so I think it's a Saddler:
I have a great little FREE streaming audio app on my phone and tablet called Tunein. I use it to stream OTR via my car's audio input jack. I'm usually listening to either Radio Noir or 1710 Antioch, but there are plenty of OTR sites that you kind find by searching "old time radio". You can also...
It's been a while since I posted in WHAYWT?, so here goes. It was a Campdraft weekend for me:
Friday's hat was my Campdraft conversion:
Today's hat is my Bluegrass Green CD:
At the Hop was #1 on the pop charts.
Raunchy (the Ernie Freeman version) was #1 on the R&B charts.
There were three versions of Raunchy released in 1957 (I think Freeman's version was the, uh, raunchiest); all of them charted.
Also, NBC Radio aired the last episode of X Minus One on my...
If the first Swedish film had been the only Larsson adaptation then I would be strongly in the "don't need an English version" camp. I didn't notice the subtitles at all after the first few minutes and my college-age son concurred that it wasn't a distraction. He did crack up when I leaned over...
At the risk of steering you into another "acquisition disorder" hobby, I suggest you check out the wet-shaving scene at www.badgerandblade.com You'll see a few Loungers over there.
I got into shaving with vintage instruments about a year or so ago and haven't looked back - just be prepared...
While I wait for the new Walter Mosley novel to come out, I'm re-reading the Lew Archer novels by Ross MacDonald. I've just finished the third one, The Way Some People Die, and am starting The Ivory Grin today. Great stuff.
I devoured all of the Doc Savage paperbacks in the 70s - loved those James Bama covers. Same with The Shadow and The Avenger. I wish someone would digitize the Avenger novels; only a few short stories have been converted to e-text. Thankfully I managed to get all the Shadow and Doc e-texts...
