I don't think the chain to shirt button attachment is to keep from loosing the tie bar, rather it is to keep your tie from swinging around. It keeps the tie centered and inside your jacket. A tie bar is heavy, and without the chain, may cause the tie to continually fall outside of your jacket...
You have a prodigious noggin! So you should look at Vintage Silhouettes - Art Fawcett can make you a sweet lid for a little more than that undistinguished wool hat, his reputation is unassailable...

Re: the pinhole, a little gentle massaging around the hole might persuade the hole to close up somewhat. If that doesn't work, I'd forget about it.
For the Spock-ear problem, you could try Scout felt hat rain & stain protector on the underside of the brim. I think it's a pretty benign product...
W&W did a good job on one of my hats (adding brim binding, changing ribbon) and a so-so job on the other (new sweat band, up-sizing). The sweat band was put in correctly, but the hat wasn't really big enough afterwards. Turns out they didn't take the ribbon off the hat when trying to stretch it...
Someone posted here a while back about a similar situation. The ribbon binding was removed from a hat, and the stitch holes were prominent. As I recall they just added new stitching by hand to fill the holes with a matching thread color - without bothering to put a new ribbon on. It looked good...
I wear a 7-3/4 and am just a bit taller than you. I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend you NOT start out by ordering an Akubra from Oz. If you don't like it, you're pretty much stuck, as return shipping is prohibitive. I think you're much better off ordering from a US vendor...
For California, I think straw is the way to go - that way the hat would be wearable year-round. A nice Panama or Milan straw with black ribbon would be great, e.g. David Morgan sells a nice one (among many others, of course).
If a darker color is wanted, I'd suggest the Akubra Capricorn in...
Yes, JLee has it right. Nothing wrong with Royal quality felt - it's a little stiff, a little coarse, but only when compared to the nicer grades. Sovereign is noticeably nicer than Royal quality, so it's interesting that the price difference is generally small, sometimes nonexistent. An old...
^^^ The differences are brim size, felt quality, finish, and ribbon width - the brim width is really different between the two - what size brim are you comfortable with?
Firenze: brim width 2-3/8, silk finish Sovereign felt, ribbon looks about 1-1/2 wide
Dexter: brim width 2-3/4, suede...
^^^ A.C. Yes, the link pops up the chestnut colored boots which are full price at $140 as are the black and brown leather. It's the suede version in multiple colors that is on sale at $112. I happened to be looking at the blue suede, which made me think they were all on sale....
This is correct. The weight of a hat may be enough to deform the felt of the crown or brim, but not to reform the shape of a sweatband. Also, the plastic hat rests appear to fit closely to a Stetson regular oval.
Agreed with Dinerman and Grizzly, I've only flipped out a sweatband once or twice on a hat, when it was truly drenched. Years ago I bought a bunch of el-cheapo plastic hat stands --- they seem expensive for what they are, but if you have a collection of valuable hats, they're a minor investment...
I would guess that either the strap was shortened, or the button it was meant to be attached to was removed at some point. I'll post some photos of my jacket over the weekend.
Double-breasted jacket strap - the answer!
I have a very nice custom-made double-breasted jacket that I bought at a thrift store about a year ago. It has the same strap feature the LMH2 mentions --- I've been meaning to post it, as it's unusual, but sort of let it slide.
Anyway, my jacket has...
These are 'hobnailed boots', some interesting history on them here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobnailed_boots
They are quite imposing, can't imagine wearing them in the city, however...
Just spotted this new cardigan at J Peterman the other day: http://www.jpeterman.com/Advanced-Shawl-Sweater
Looks good to me, I prefer a long and loose fit. As usual there is insufficient detail in the silly sketch to make a rational decision --- I assume this is by design...
Mountain and Sackett has 10 tartan ties in wool. Their ties are made by hand in NYC and very high quality, so fairly expensive. If you can justify the cost I think you'll be pleased.
