Well I'm not the UFO as you put it ;) I am not a manufacturer either but just a person who decided he wants to get a nice leather jacket (motorcycle style) to relive some of the things I did in my youth when I had a motorbike and a black leather motorcycle jacket (brand unknown or forgotten by...
Thats because I knew zilch at the time I ordered and then found the Fedora Lounge Forum as I was googling for more info on Horween's Chromexel. From reading through many of the posts here about leather and jackets I started getting lots of questions in my mind and started googling and thinking...
Well it turns out it is not too late to cancel or change to another leather. I just spoke to Will by phone and they haven't started on my jacket yet. So I am sleeping over it another night to decide what I should do. I could go for smooth steer or biker steer but both those hides are much...
Indeed it's what I also said. The skins are drum dyed in brown and then top coated with black. But they don't drum dye in black because there is more demand for brown and it would cost too much extra time and money to drum dye in black. A drum costs around $100,000 so getting an extra drum just...
I thought so too but the answer is no. It's to save time and money. Proper way would be to drum dye in black for a finished black end product for black jackets.
They make most leathers with brown base because the natural color of leather is brown.
(brown is also the most popular color for top...
I have decided to just leave the order as it is...I am sure I will grow to love the special characteristics of that particular leather. You have to take chances sometimes in life. I hope most of you will understand my concerns though especially as I have saved up a long time for this jacket and...
I discovered that drum dyeing is a more expensive process as it takes much longer this way to allow the dyes to soak right through the leather and the drums used cost a lot of money. So to me it seems that the hand dyeing Horweens use is a cost cutting method and not as good as drum dyed. Drum...
So is it normal that the Horweens Chromexell Black Steer is only a thin layer of black dye hand rubbed in on the smooth side and that the suede side and what's in between is all brown? Is this to ensure a nice patina with aging? Does drum dyed leather where the dye has permeated right through...
Well you obviously share my concern as you are experiencing color loss on your black chromexell to an extent that you don't sound altogether too happy with that process. Could you post a photo of your jacket ?
I did contact them about 1 and a half week ago about this issue. I spoke to Will who told me that with normal wear the color would hold for at least 30 years and that it is a fantastic leather and that it will only start looking better and nicer all the time as the years go by. That convinced...
Thanks...that sounds a lot more positive already. By the way....what is actually meant by "Overdye"? I have googled the term and find nothing mentioned about it in relation to leather. By the sound of it it sounds like it could mean leather being dyed with another color then the original color...
Thanks..that's more like what I need to hear. Sometimes it takes a bit of rudimentary prodding and doubting the quality of a product to get the correct and real answers.
Hardly a searing indictment. I don't know if I like this leather or not...that's why I am posting...to get reactions and experiences from people who have a jacket made out of this particular leather. I want to hear stories that will convince me that my choice is the right one. So far most of...
Well one would expect that with a famous name and reputation like Horween has and especially with their famous old traditional Chromexel tanning method, the quality of the dye would be superlative and would be colorfast.
Why do they hand rub the dye in instead of drum dyeing it? Drum dyeing...
