Well, after carefully peeling the sweat barrier from the liner, which caused a little sweat along the way, I found the ID tag. It looks a little like the diagram below:

Visigoth: Open Crown was about 5 3/4". It's about the tallest I've had next to my Peters bros which had a (I swear) 6 1/4" Crown.

I have several varieties of that phone. My Pop used to work for Western Electric and had collected several phones from the different phone offices he worked in. They're in great working order and sound just fine. Personally I think they sound better than most modern phones.

Yeah, it is pretty brittle. The leather is in excellent condition though. Maybe a little Lexol will loosen things enough and get a bit of lubrication going.

Well thank you Havershaw! I think I have seen that one on e-bay, and contenplated putting a bid on it, but with two hats already bought and a trip to Disneyland coming up, well you know how it goes. Must save one's duckets for the trip.;)

Old sweat barrier...
Just behind the sweat band there is a very thin sweat barrier (I guess that is what one would call it). It is reddish in color and seems to have sort of welded it self to the sweat band and the liner.
Would steam be a good tool to help loosen this bond so as not to tear...
The hat or the edge treratment? Again, a lovely lid, wouldn't change much.
Sharptoys is right, a little steam is ok.
