Matt didn't have a name under that hat, but I recognize that finish. Stetson and Dobbs often refer to that finish as a "silk finish" when being described on the Stetson website or a hatters website. The Dobbs I rebuilt was an older stock hat. The felt body was made by Tonak but I am unsure if...
I'm a sucker for Long hairs/Velours and I REALLY like Hatco's modern long hairs. Unfortunately the brims are usually really short on them. I have contemplated buying a modern long hair from them, taking it apart, and re-blocking it with a nice crown shape but the brims are too short to do that...
That is REALLY cool. Thanks so much, Rusty!!! In the last two days I have found out more about the hat and the man than I ever thought I would two years ago. Now I think I'm going to keep the hat. Its way too cool.
WOW!!!! That's seriously incredible. The amount of info right there is stunning!! I figured Mr. Crosetti was probably born in Italy, so to have a matching date of death and age is awesome! The fact that he lived in California also checks out because Triest & Co's main office and retail space was...
Thank you, Gentlemen! Hopefully another Lion Brand hat will be found one day! I wish they offered PhD courses in College that focused on hats and hat history. That would be a class I would most definitely show up to all the time. LOL.
That's really good to hear, Jeff. Thanks for all your patience with all of our questions. If Stetson was able to improve color saturation in the felt without the use of powder, that's a MAJOR win.
Its all about details. I LOVE pre-30's hats because the materials they used, the printing quality, and stamping quality is always top notch. Even a cheaper hat back then had some beautiful trimming details. First its vintage stamps on sweatbands......then maybe better quality leather....then...
Like Jeff said, it really depends. Usually anything Stetson from the 20's and 30's brings a premium and anything pre-1940's in bigger sizes always bring big premiums. However, I have seen size 7 and 7 1/8 whippets sell for some good money, but I have offered up very rare 20's stuff and at times...
And this last photo is most likey the coolest part about this hat. When I received it, this was tucked inside the sweatband. It has the owners of the hats name, date of birth, and date of death.

And lastly.......here's some pictures of my Triest & Co Hat "The Lion Brand" (I believe this is the only one on the lounge)
I wanted to share some great information that I was able to dig up about a very rare and unknown company. This thread is for THE LION BRAND made by Triest and Co and NOT the Langenberg Hat Co which was famous for making the LION SPECIAL.
A little background:

I'm glad you decided to buy one. :)
I just know how many of us have wanted a production Open Crown hat that we would be proud to wear on our heads. Its not Custom....and that's the point. It's a production hat that hopefully will be available to major chains someday and anyone who walks into a...
Here's my take on this.......
These hats are being made and offered in smaller runs so I can understand the slightly raised price but they are still really not out of line with Stetsons current price offerings. I LOVE custom hats and I LOVE custom hat makers........but every one except Optimo...
Thanks so much for posting this info and the pictures, Jeff! That actually looks pretty decent for modern day felt. Looks very close to 1960's Stetson felt when the stiffener level was upped just a bit from the 50's. The tiny amount of spidering is actually VERY good compared to other modern day...
