Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Just had the collar popped up this past Fri. night. Needed it and a scarf as we were walking over the Hudson River. I also have 1 WWII coat but have never used the hood latch as of yet. I think I will give that a workout very soon as winter weather is now making it's way up here in New York.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Hey Peacoat, How are you? I didn't know there were non odor moth protectors. Are they as effective as moth balls? I guess you can get them at Wal Mart or Home Depot, or maybe even the super market?? I don't go nuts over the smell of moth balls but I also would not miss the smell. Some people...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I have seen tags with the "R" after the numerical size but I have never seen a tag from the '50s or '60s that had an "L" or "S".

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I leave the box of moth balls in the closet all year long. You can smell them all winter long. I guess the draw back is the coats smell of moth balls. While the smell doesn't bother me, some people don't like it. I'd rather smell the moth balls then risk damage to my coats. I started wearing...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I have a few peacoats. In the off season I keep each one in a vinyl clothes bag in a separate "woolens closet" with a box of moth balls opened from April through Oct. I then take each coat out of it's bag and then close the box of moth balls and keep the moth balls unopened in a plastic bag...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Ebay would be the best place to look for the large anchor buttons. They are very common. Not sure if the vintage vary from the newer buttons ( I don't think so though), but you could search for "vintage" US Navy Pea Coat buttons also on ebay.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

From my experience a few years ago I would scour ebay and the internet for vintage dark blue Kersey pea coats in long sizes. I did this for 2 or 3 years. The oldest year I have come across in L (longs) is from 1969. My size is a 46. I can wear size 46, but 46L is ideal. I never came across a...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Just thought I'd throw this out. Speaking of USCG coats. I bought a WWII USCG coat from ebay. Don't know what year it was but it wound up being a size 44 instead of my size 46. I decided to sell it back on ebay. The material on that coat was INCREDIBLE. Superior and more beautiful then the other...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Peacoat, I'm pretty sure it was a 1938. Wish I knew where I saw it. Was one of those sites that you just come across when going through Google, etc. I think I'll enter 1938 US Navy peacoat and see what happens. To tell you the truth I'm not too crazy about the WWI coats. My favorite are the...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

The coat looks very good. I think it just makes it size wise though. IMHO ideally it could be one size larger. Peacoats from the '30s and earlier are Very rare and hard to find.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Peacoat, Was wondering - was that 1932 peacoat the same as a WWII or was it a WWI version?? I'm pretty sure the '38 I saw was just like a WWII. If I remember it also had the throat strap.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Kersey and Melton cloths are both 100% wool. The RL label states 80 wool/20 nylon. I'm assuming that both could not be considered Kersey or Melton. Peacoat - somewhere on the internet I came across pictures of a 1938 peacoat. I forget where the heck it was. It appeared to be very similar or the...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I've found size 48 to be VERY rare in Kersey coats. Size 46 is much more common then 48, but still few and far between. I never came across a size 50 during my "peacoat hunting days". I didn't even think they made them. If you think about it, there were height and weight restrictions back then.

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I remember reading not too long ago one of the posters here stated that longs (xxL) were made starting in 1962. I'm assuming that they also started making shorts (xxS) along with long sizes starting in 1962? He also stated that starting in 1962 regular length coats were sized (xxR) as in 38R...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Peacoat, Most Kersey coats are getting fewer and far between. Sizes 36-40 are still much more common then larger sizes however. Prices have also been going up. I'm real glad I got my stock of 46s when I did. They (46s) don't pop up on ebay any where as often as they used to. Peacoats were...

    Peacoat Question

Do you wear a common size? If so I would also look for a vintage dark blue US Navy Kersey coat. They really are "the cats meow". The most common sizes are 36, 38, and 40. 44 and 46 are a bit rare, and 48 very rare. I started with 1 and now have 8. Caution - They are addicting.

    Peacoat Question

My take is that I love peacoats so damn much that I don't care what's on my head. I do wear black knitted caps with my peacoats though. My peacoats are dark navy blue (Kersey wool), and black (Melton wool). I would also highly suggest a vintage dark navy blue (Kersey) peacoat.

My new (old) peacoat (date question)

One thing I have noticed is the old dark blue Kersey coats acquire a purplish hue over the top of the dark blue. You can see this when you are outside in the bright sun.
