Try 8 1/2!!!
Gentlemen,
Not so fast!! I have actually made a couple hats size 8 1/2!
Yes, BUCKET HEAD is the thought I had as I was shaping them and trying to look at them in the mirror to check correctness. They darn near went over my shoulders when I put them on.
No, I am not calling...
Gentlemen and Lovely Women,
This is a copy of a post I did a while back on another site.
Just thought I would throw this out there for fun. NOT TO STIR ANY TROUBLE!!!
NOTE: I do not use X's in my hats any more. I call them what they are. 50% Beaver, 100% Beaver, 100% Beaver Belly, and...

You say it right Art.
My thoughts are that when you buy a hat new, you should buy what you want from the start. Soft, stiff or whatever.
To take a new hat and go through all that it takes to make it what you want it to be can sometimes cost more than it would have been to just...
Touchy Stuff??
Rick,
Stiffeners can be very tricky!
I make felt hat stiffener for retailers in 55 gallon batches.
To break it down, you almost have to know the chemical makeup of the agents used to make it.
Basicly, some are water based, some varnish type based and some alcohol based...

Hey! I was just having lunch in town yesterday at a diner that has an old 30s -40s atmosphere.
On the tables under the glass were ads from different publications.
I was taken by the fact that every man in the pictures had a hat on. Some appeared as young as late teens. But all of the...

Dr T,
I can't get Private massages yet. I need to be a member longer or??? I don't really know how this site works that well. I make hats for a majician here that works 2 different cruise ships. They are the classic gambler style telescope crown with short pencil rolled derby style brim.

Dr Trinidad,
I think you are talking about the short crown tapered hat??? It is a reproduction of a movie. Had Joh Wayne and Dean Martin in it. I can't remember the young kid, but he always said it was his dads' hat and he couldn't shoot a gun very well, so they always gave him a shotgun...
Hello Gentlemen, --And Women! :)
I have been making hats now for about 24 years and see that fedoras and more city style hats are becoming very popular once again. That is wonderful to see, as I get very tired making the same styles all the time.

Hello,
Yep, as Art said, "lesson learned".
As the years tick by, one learns (mostly by feel) haw hot is just hot enough or too hot. How long on the stretcher is just right or too long, etc.
It's all basicly trial and error at times. Best to take little bites.
Thankfully, the only...
Finishes
Hello,
There are many different type of finishes on felt hats.
Silk, Angora, Velour, Suede, beaver, grizzly, etc.
Any "Master Hatter" should be able to do all of these finishes on any hat.
The finish on this hat is coomonly known as a an Angora or Grizzly finish.
I used...
No Butter Here! LOL!
I didn't mean to sound like I was buttering you up here. :)
I just wanted you all to know that I feel very welcomed here and you all seem very civil in how you communicate your thoughts and oppinions.
I appreciate that, as I am sincere in all that I do. Whether that is...
Hello to all the members here,
I have been here for just a short time and as I look around from time to time, I see that you all seem to have integrety and sincerity here.
I truly appreciate that and am glad that I can be a part of it...even if I don't get the time to come here often...
