Just a note of thanks

I stumbled onto this place via a Google search for a Moose River hat. I've been reading a lot of old posts and would just like to say thanks to the powers that be for providing a pleasant and well mannered website and to the membership for having the manners and common sense displayed in the posts. I am a moderator on another website, not related to anything found here, and I know what it takes to maintain the quality found here. My hat, (that I don't own yet), is off to the ladies and gentlemen I see posting here.

I put this note here rather than another area because I'm not much on style or fashion at all. But hats are just a plain common sense type item to me. Ball caps and western hats don't cut it for this cop/farmer/logger/jack of all trades. Skin cancer has reared it's ugly head and if I have to wear a hat, it'll be one I like, rather than the easiest thing to find.

Who knows, maybe someday I'll even own a tie!

Welcome and thanks for the kind words. I am grateful to have a fantastic team who keep the peace in this joint. It is rare to have sharp people who have integrity that will give their time to serve.

I especially appreciate your words since you are a moderater yourself. That is a high complement. Thank you for sharing.

I am glad you found the place. Enjoy!

Welcome! But be warned...

This site is both addictive and highly influential! You may find yourself seeking out more and more hats on eBay in between reading posts, and even starting to believe that yes, you DO need to wear a tie as part of dressing in a classic style to go with your hats! :D

Cheers,
Tom

Welcome

Good day, and welcome to the lounge.
Sorry to hear about the skin cancer. My old man passed away from the terrible disease a year ago.
Just out of curiosity, have you decided on a hat for yourself yet?

Just for some general skin cancer information on products.
Clothing like everything else has a SPF factor to them. Some materials block the sun better then others. Company’s like http://www.tilley.com/ and http://www.columbia.com/ have started to label some of there clothing with there SPF factors. Some hat company’s are following there example. But rest assured, if you are looking at a felt hat, they naturally bock the rays. Panama hats on the other hand, depending on the material and weave, don’t always block all the rays.

Again, welcome to the lounge and I hope you find it as helpful and enjoyable as I have.

In my opinion, skin cancer will be the number one factor in the ever increasing popularity of hats over the next 10-20 years. Johnnycanuck pointed you to a couple good links. Also check out Sunday Afternoons. We sell a ton of their hats but they also do some nice clothing with certified UV protection. Certified being the key when it comes to UV protective hats and clothes.

Thanks for the welcome folks. Currently I'm wearing a Kromer Storm Cap as It's darn cold here on the Canadian border! I picked up a couple of Panama Jack straws at Wally World last summer. 3 actually, but the first went through the haybine and even this slob wouldn't be seen in that one! They're ok for work and you have to understand we're talking grease and dirt and blood here for those of you who are agriculturally challenged. My concern now is something a little more substantial for everyday wear as the PJ's are a bit too western for me. The Moose River hats were popular where I grew up in the Adirondacks, along with the Effnem crushers. I'll also admit I have a certain fondness for what you all refer to as the "Golden Age", the late 30's-late 50's. I'm a little uncomfortable thinking about anything remotely to do with "fashion" be it classic or otherwise. But, if I'm to protect myself and keep SWMBO happy I'd sooner emulate the overtly masculine 40's style than attempt to blend in with the practically uni-sex looks we have today.

So be gentle with me, I'm working through the fact I'm clothing challenged.

Truth be told I wore a Stetson (Stratton actually) for 16 years before I got my ball cap that came with getting off the road. And I do own ties, lots of them. But they're all purple knit clip ons and come with a NYSP tie clasp!
