I'm not sure the mystique surrounding the manufacture of silk plush is entirely justified. As a simple matter of economics, I think it never received widespread manufacture because of its specialist niche, fragility and expense of materials, and because the process of making it is labor...
New silk plush, they claim. Thus far nobody on this forum has manned up enough to buy a new hat from silktophat, though the maker insists it is true new silk plush. It could very well be, essentially all he'd have to do is get a contract with a silk weaver to make some very long pile velvet and...
It depends on what you're looking for. The hatters mentioned can probably do it relatively inexpensively, but neither Akubra, Optimo, nor Pauls Hat Works make what I would consider a true top hat. They specialize in fine fedoras, and apply the same principles to top hats as they would to...
I know it's frowned upon by loungers, but I'm posting this because Asilus' PM doesn't work yet. It is just about exactly what you're looking for, asilus http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1970-s-Dunn-co-Bowler-Hat-Unworn-/370647439241?pt=UK_Vintage_Hats&hash=item564c4f1789#ht_500wt_1204
Old fashioned top-hat buckets (leather or thick hard pressed cardboard) are the best for holding toppers, as they only touch the brim or else the top hat rests on the flat tip of the crown. Vintage buckets sometimes have problems, though, such as rotting leather and dirt inside. In terms of...
Congrats, that's a beautiful topper! There's nothing quite like the feeling of owning a well-preserved vintage silk plush topper, even if you only wear it out a few times a year. The 'extra quality' verses 'standard quality' stuff really shouldn't make much of a difference to the contemporary...
I couldn't say for sure either, it could be. But at the time the main Bowler manufacturers were Christys', Dunn & Co, Lock & Co, Bates etc. And those companies made many types of hats.
Yeah, it's a mystery to me who exactly this was targeted toward. Maybe skateboarders bought them all back in 2008, but who knows? I've never seen one on ebay before, and it's a very nice hat. Definitely not intended as protective headgear, but then most of what Globe sells is skateboarder...
I recently purchased a wool felt Christys bowler on ebay that was part of a numbered release of 300 bowlers specially manufactured for Globe inc., a major retailer of skateboards and related items. The limited edition hats are quite nice, and I like the purple lining more than the typical...
frussel is right. As a fellow 7 5/8 (US size), I've learned that if you want to pursue this hobby when you have a big head, you have to have the patience of a tree, some reasonable diligence on the 'bay, and the ability to compromise looks over comfort. More often than not i've had to settle for...
Here are a few photos of a Lock bowler that arrived yesterday. From the 1980s, I believe. It included a perfectly preserved Lock co advertising pamphlet that looks either late 80s or early 90s. I'll ask Lock if they can date it. Stapled to the pamphlet is a business card belonging to the...
I sold it because I'm downsizing my collection a little in anticipation of a move. It's a real gem of a hat. I'm sorry to see it go, but glad it's going to a lounger.
