    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

Sorry that I misunderstood you. I still stand by my opinion that the women's movement helped women and was not a disaster, as claimed by foofoogal. :D

    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

PrettySquareGal, why would you think I was referring to the suffragette movement? I, too, was referring to the "second wave," which focused on cultural and political inequalities and issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, equal pay, sexual harassment, and equal...

    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

Excuse me, but "If you cannot figure this one out I have no way of explaining it to you." is pretty condescending. I don't agree that that there is a disaster or that the nation was affected negatively. I was interested in why you think this has occurred. You seem fixated on this "men make...

    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

Foofoogal - What disaster? And how has it affected the nation negatively? "Men making women work?" Men have always had to work, why shouldn't women if they need or want to? My mother worked (back in the 50s), I work, my daughter works. There is no man standing over us forcing us to work...

    The Library Card Catalog

I use my county library system a lot, so the computerized catalog works really well for me. I log onto the system from home and search for books and have them sent to my branch or put on hold. The catalog at the city library brought back a lot of memories, though. :)

    The Library Card Catalog

My county has a large and very good library system, but my city has only one small (and lovely) library. I stopped in there yesterday to get a library card. They still have the old card catalog, but they don't use it. The librarian told me that they couldn't bring themselves to get rid of it. I...

    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

I don't know how old you are, or if you lived before the feminist movement, but your life would be quite different now if it wasn't for the women's movement.

    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

Re: the feminist movement I grew up in the 50s (born in 1950). I hated and resented, the fact that I didn't have the same opportunities as the boys did. It may not sound like much now to girls/women who have always been allowed to play on sports teams, get sports scholarships to college, be...

    The fall of the phone

I own a cell phone and I like having one, but I usually don't answer it and I send calls to voice mail (the same with the phone in my house). I am not a talking-on-the-phone type of person and don't like to speak on the phone unless I feel like it or I think the call is important. I don't...

    Thanks a lot, folks...

Welcome Harpo. I found this board when looking for info on a couple of Fedoras I was going to sell on ebay. Been here since. (I'm not really into period dress either, but I love the styles and movies of the 20s-40s and I wear hats. :) )

    Top 5 WW2 movies

Saving Private Ryan A Guy Named Joe The White Cliffs of Dover Probably not quite what you're looking for, but The Boy with Green Hair is an interesting story about a WWII war orphan that has a definite message. I first saw this film while in grade school in the 50s and I still remember it.
