LizzieMaine's idea sounds fun but I'm also wondering if the younger generation will actually get what all the vintage devices stand for.
I believe there are devices/systems that interfere with reception of cell phone signals. A lot of the theatres here have them. I've noticed that in many...
In regards to driving, everyone should remember that you drive on opposite sides of the road in London and in DC :p
So, unless Edward's used to driving on both sides (I imagine, living in GB means having plenty of chances to go over to the European continent and drive on the opposite side) and...
Actually, Zori--otherwise called Setta for men--can be worn, and are worn barefoot, as well as with tabi which are sewn (not knitted) from cotton (or linen for summer) fabrics. Formal style as shown here requires tabi, but with very casual kimono, the person can wear zori without tabi.
On the...
Yes, more than a month now and still around 140,000 people living in shelters spread out all over the Tohoku and other unaffected areas as well, and still many areas that are isolated and lack social infrastructure. Electricity , water, sewage systems. Flu patients are on the rise, as are...
Tokyo yesterday (Saturday, April 2nd) afternoon.
Since it seems that there's a great misconception that Tokyo is unlivable due to destruction from the earthquake and tsunami, a few photos I took of the neighborhood I live in, yesterday afternoon.
The cherry blossoms in 1/4 bloom a few...
Three weeks today since the earthquake-tsunami.

30-45' (10-15 meters) tsunami that gutted out 3-4 floor buildings. Towards the end of the footage, multiple oil tanks can be seen floating. The oil spill from them later caught fire that went on for 2-3...
I beg to differ. The areas that were hit worst are all closely knit local societies, so there were many people helping each other to survive. Maybe not as eyecatching as this story, but plenty of unobserved heroics.
I hope you'll all raise a glass to every one involved in the rescue effort...
Thank you.
IAEA's most recent update states that the radation level in Tokyo and other cities are far below the danger level to require any action.
Plus, they have shown no indication of Idoine-131 nor Cessium-137.
IAEA Briefing on Fukushima Nuclear Emergency (18 March 2011, 14:00 UTC)
Thank you PSG and everyone on FL, I'm fine :)
Tokyo's fine, too :)
I realize there is a lot of concern about the Fukushima (I noticed elsewhere --not in FL--that someone had it confused with Fukuoka, which is a city in the south) generators, and it's true that the issue is very very serious...
Atticus Finch, still, loss of personal things that are filled with memories--photographs, keepsakes, mementos-- are devastating.
It must have hurt very very much.
Tsunami
It was just in the news that the height of the tsunami wave caluclated from the damaged buildings was 45' (15m) , and that there could have been places wher it was as high as 60' (20m) :eeek:
Survivors have reported that the sea engulfed up to the 4th floor of a 5 floor building in a...
Here's a comprehensive rundown on what's the issue about the Fukushima power plant.
Factbox: What is happening inside Japan's nuclear reactors?
Yes, the nuclear power plant issue is very very serious, and very very difficult to control. Everyone concerned is working hard disregarding the...
Both daizawaguy and I are in Tokyo, which is pretty much safe for now, and most things are going on as normal, save for electricity.
We'll be having planned black outs of three hours or so, starting tomorrow, to conserve electricity.
With major nuclear power plants knocked out along with a...
The generator of the power plant is intact. The outer walls of the building housing the generator collapesed due to the hydrogen vapor build up as they were working to lower the pressure. Somehow, they are still managing to keep things under control.
The damages from the tsunamis far exceed...
Prepared as we are (we do have the strictest building codes, I believe) nature often surpasses the human imagination.
The area most hard hit by the tsunami (not just one, but many waves upon waves) have a lot of coves, small inlets and bays enclosed by high cliffs, and the people live in the...
I'll have to say, those who are safe, are lucky, thanks to the grace of the good Lord.
As the day wears on the extent of the damages are still not yet fully known. The deaths and the missing count is rapidly rising. On the other hand, many are being evacuated by air--hellicopters mostly, as...
I hear the tsunami hit Hawai'i too, I hope no damages there.
It has turned out that the waves were much higher than first forecast, so, up to 24-30'. It seems that a lot of the analysers are broken at the moment because the waves were much higher than the set limit for the instruments. The...
