In response to everyone!
Wow! what a response!
Firstly- yes, it is a three piece- jacket, waistcoat, trousers.
Secondly, the fabric inside the pockets of the jacket is thick black cotton twill, on the trousers a coarse linen-like fabric. I will post some detailed pics. when I have the time...
Alterations...
You're right- they are a fraction too long for me. Honestly, apart from this photo shoot and maybe one other for my next album, I've kinda decided not to wear this suit at all!- It really is completely flawless- I'll post some pics of the inside of the jacket and trousers...
I wear one...
Apparently, one of my friends once said to another (in a concerned tone of voice): "I saw T.E. wearing a straw boater the other day... and I think he was serious!" gotta love that reaction!
Hepworths CC41 utility marked 3-piece (pristine!)
Hello!
I have been eager to post some images of my suits (I have several original 30's-40's suits) including this one (and the best by far) a post 1941 utility marked British Hepworths’ three piece. It is absolutely mint as well- I would...
Fedora or Trilby dilema: solution = Snap-Brim!
Hi folks,
I dislike Fedora and Trilby as terminology; with the vast style differences and subtle nuances between all hats, I think its time to "Call a spade a spade!" In all my posts (I know there aren't that many yet!) I prefer the terminology...
Battersby made some fantastic hats, although they are hard to come by, even in the UK. Judging by the look of your hat I'd say late 50's-1960's. I have quite a few Battersby adverts from 'Punch' magazine; a society journal popular from the Victoria era until well in to the 1960's. I will scan...
Dating Dunn Homburg
Firstly, let me congratulate you on a fantastic homburg; Dunn made (in my opinion) some of the finest, most stylish English hats of any of the great manufactuers. This hat, dates from the early to mid 1930's; I am fortunate to have a similar hat with a dated box and...
Dunn & Co Opera Hat c.1930's
Before this thread goes too far, I thought I'd introduce the opera hat for those who are new to the world of top hats. The Opera or 'Gibus' as it is sometimes referred is an ingenious collapsing top hat held erect by a wire frame and springs. In can be squashed...
Lincoln Bennett 'Standard' Quality Topper cerca early 30's
Hello,
I actually love toppers! I wouldn't wear one in the day; a bowler creates enough commotion when I wear one, but a couple of times a year at university events where one can courageously step out in white tie, the topper is just...
Can anyone help me date my ties?
Here is a personal favourite; a Beau Brummel All Silk tie with awesome 'art deco' ivy pattern. I guessed it's from the 40's- anyone here know any better?
It is printed on a fabic that has a woven pattern too- many of my other ties are like this.
Circa late 1920’s early 1930’s English Velour ‘Extra Best Manufacture’
‘Extra Best’ Velour unbranded snap brim of the early 1930’s. Very unusual for an English hat, it has a welted-in edge, although this is so subtle it is barely noticeable. It is black and has a long nap fur which I have brush...
Churchill Milan Straw (c.1950's)
This is a Churchill very fine Milan straw. I do not have it with me at the moment, so I cannot take a photo of the inside, but when I bought it, from the outside it looked fabulous, on the inside the leather was extremely cracked! Wore it several times last...
Hi Warbaby,
Because this hat was stripped right down to its component parts, I was able to sponge clean each part with a weak solution of Detol (that’s a brand, do you have that in America?) which is a non-bleaching disinfectant used on carpets, household goods etc. and removed the mould...
1930's hat dimensions
Hi there! Thanks for your interest in this hat. I’m afraid I do not have this one with me at the moment; I will update you on the critical dimensions when we are next reunited… In the meantime, I have this Battersby London 1930’s Ambassador model to hand, it is a very...
Recently Purchased
Hello!
Best low-cost correspondents I’ve come across? try these- made by NPS in Northampton UK, go to their website (www.nps-solovair.co.uk) and contact them directly- they do not appear to advertise this shoe anywhere in their literature! It may of course be discontinued...
The Cars!
RE: The cars. My apologies I put Traction Avant in "" quotation marks to indicate this was a flippant comment rather than a citation; I cannot be sure what make/model the cars are- The cars are very stylized but evoke the impression of that style/period of French car- wouldn't you...
Glue type
Hi Bob,
Firstly, the repair is ‘hard’- flexible, but not 'soft'. At the present time, this was the best thing I could think of. The repairs were small and one was almost hidden by the grosgrain band.
The glue I used was Cascamite (that is a trade name, google that for info)...
Bayard: French catalugue, cerca late 1930's
I really like the fashion plate from Esquire; these are really nice examples- thanks for sharing them. I find copies of the magazine are quite expensive to buy in England. I thinks these images will fit nicely here; a few plates from a French Bayard...
c.1933 G.A. Dunn & Co Homburg
I can see I'm going to have a great time sharing my collection and building a friendship with you guys...
I suppose this hat should really be posted near the one I showed you above; no provenance with this one I'm afraid although one could assume a similar date...
