Acidic sweat
I think sweat can do some damage, but it's prob'ly less than you think. I think just wearing the hat regularly will remove the markings on the sweatband. I have seen numerous vintage lids with zero marking visible on the sweat. The pristine vintage hats you see on FL were seldom worn... -

SOLD! The Whippet is sold for a measly $110 (including shipping) to a big fish in Florida. The shop even threw in a vintage stetson hatbox for FREE! It's an oval box with a cotton ribbon that ties across the top to prevent it from falling open. I've never seen one like it...- jdbenson

Hats = Coats = Outerwear I think of my hat the same as my overcoat/jacket/coat. When it's proper to remove my coat I remove my hat, too. When I walk into work, I leave my coat and hat on until I get to my desk when I take them both off and hang them up. At a store, they both stay on...
