Given the parameters you've set out for your "outdoors Fedora" one brand comes to mind in todays' world, Akubra ! They currently make one of the BEST all around production made hat in the world. They are not mabe as fine a finish as can be found in vintage hats or custom made hats available...
First: they are ALL Akubra hats, made by Akubra in Australia. As has been discussed here many times, David Morgan is the SOLE importer of Akubra's in the US and ALL US retailers get their hats from him. As to differences, There are certain models which he does not or cannot import (Campdraft for...
A hat with a brim UNDER 3" IS NOT a Cowboy Hat! Sounds like you were wanting something in the "Hipster" or Stingy style if you think this brim size is "Cowboy" like. As for the hat, it's a wool felt and as such will not take a lot of rain or rough wear and hold it's shape as well as a FUR FELT...
So the Whippet made in the 50's was the SAME size and proportions as that made in 1937 ? Or did they adapt to the style sense of the times as has seemingly been done with the current Whippet? if so, I'll take the one from the 50's :)
I REALLY LIKE your Whippet David !! LOVE the color! It reminds me of my father's Rittenhouse in style and proportions. I LOVE the style of hats made in the late 40s/early 50s much better than those of the 30s for sure :)
A lot depends on which model and your size and the color you want as far as determining how fast it will be shipped. Many of the retailers in OZ do not keep large stocks on hand considering that the factory is in OZ. This is the summer time in Australia and the factory traditionally closes down...
Unless you absolutely need to order your Akubra from OZ, David Morgan, the US importer carries most of the styles in sizes up to 7 7/8 and has several models up to a US size 8. Take a look :)
Taking mother to early mass this morning. It's her 60th wedding anniversery today so I'm wearing my father's 1948 Rittenhouse in homage to him and the day. It's got some of the softest, smoothest felt of any hat I own. Like him, I ownly wear it as a "dress" or "Sunday go ta meetin' " hat :)
"...not to much of a conversion, ... " ? It's NO LONGER a CD :) What was it about the CD that you liked that made you buy it since you've changed it completely ? You have done a nice job for sure making a NEW 1930's Fedora for sure just curious :)
Nice looking pork ! Your shades and goatee with the hat fit your "hipster" look well :) Here's a pic of your namesake and his hat back in 1954, Bob Bailey, the first Johnny Dollar on CBS radio.
AM radio ALWAYS had static!! My family had a Zenith similar to yours that I listened to back in the 50's and static was just part of listening to radio :)
Looks alot like the Regency Fawn of the Sydney that DM has. Akubra seems to have names for colors on their site which the different retailers have differnt names for I've found. Does HD have it in stock in your size? Would be great if you did not have to do the "OZ wait" when you order your hat :)
Sounds like it could also have been another Akubra made Stetson back when Akubra made Stetson's under license for sale in Australia :) Any other tags showing country of origin on it ?
Check out some of the "Reject" Adventurers that DM has for under $100.00 on his site, with a brim size trim, you could get that 30's look you want quite economicaly. My preference is for the mid to late 40's with wider brims and shorter crowns. :)
