    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Thanks for the tip. I already started sewing in the sweatband but I'll try that on the next one if I haven't made a tolliker yet. On a side note, sewing is a major pain if you don't know what you're doing!

Yeah you definitely have to be careful with alcohol overspray. I held the hat and sprayed it in a different direction from the stand I set it on to light it. Haven't made a tolliker yet. I just did the best I could with my iron. The brim break isn't quite as tight as I'd like it to be but it'll do.

Thanks Darrell. The brim is 3-1/2" and I just used isopropyl alcohol for burning. I've read that you should use 99% but 70% was all that I had. I actually had to use quite a bit more alcohol than I thought to get an even burn. It did even out some of the blotchiness that I had probably from over...

Well I worked up the nerve to cut it. I even got brave enough to light it on fire. Didn't get a good fire picture but I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along.

Just finished the rounding jack and I'm trying to work up the nerve to actually cut the brim. For the most part I ripped off someone's design for a simple one. It was probably off of this site but I can't remember now. Fairly crude but it should do what it's supposed to.

That was a good video. I remember seeing that on tv a couple years ago. I also really liked the Art Fawcett video that was posted a couple pages back. These have been very helpful to see how the fellas who know what they're doing do their work. I finally got a little bit of time to work on my...

Yeah I can't Yeah I can't get away with stealing any felt from the brim for the western style hat I'm going for. I might try one of the 50x beaver bodies from them for the next one. Has a little more crown height but still barely enough brim for a western.

I'll have to grab some 1000 grit at least. Yes, it's a Millinery Warehouse felt. Seems pretty decent quality to me, not that I know any better. I wouldn't mind finding a reasonably priced source for felts that I could get a little higher crown out of for my next hat. I was able to get about...

Yes it is a 180g felt and I haven't started any pouncing yet. Just picked up some sandpaper on my way home from work. I'm sure I'll have some more questions as I go along

Thanks fellas. I appreciate the info. Here's how the hat is looking so far. I'm fairly happy with the progress but there's still plenty of time to screw it up

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Hello, I'm not trying to derail anyone else's topics but this seems to be the go to thread for hat making questions. I'm in the process of making my first hat and had a question about crown ironing. In some of my reading people say never to iron the felt directly and to always use a piece of...
