The Resistol Roundup

Hat is likely from that time but it's the first time I heard of Picot. Is it a real straw? Milanish straw or another paper/or otherwise polymide material?

It is straw, but I think Picot refers to the weave of the braid. It offers pretty good ventilation as seen in the interior pic.

From a Kevin McAndrew on Etsy that is a similar vintage.

Thanks! I saw one & maybe too small & size & brim but thought I'd expand my knowledge. Thing with older hats is the leather sweatband could be shot. I've been lucky with my purchases & all in fine conditions but when you jump down from 70's 80's to 60's getting a snap, crackle pop band might just be on the table.

Anyone know of a "Denver" 4X Resistol from likely late 70's/ 80's?

I've come across Las Vegas & a few others I can't recall right now.

Has a 3 3/4 inch brim, looks to be tall crown with a sort of flat Gus crease?

Silver Belly in Resistol can be a gray tan. Palamino is a light cream with a sage tint.

They called it gray but it's not Granite Gray.

There is mist & crystal which are both light ivory creams. I have even seen ***;t Pastel.

What about Sterling??? I think I'm after Sterling./// Could also be Smoke...

Anyone care to venture what this color is? No tags but size would seem to say late 70's early 80's.

Might this be Sterling or even a more gray Silver Belly?

Anyway, I'm going for it as it has a nice horse hair hat band & I've become sort of fond of them... wish me luck!
Too late, it's mine!!!!

3 1/2 inch brim & no idea what model it is! My 2nd Winners Circle... I know I need to stop buying hats but the horsehair hat band has a good amount of worth in itself & the hat just seems to have a presence. Hoping it's a nice silver sterling color. Maybe it's Pellet? Similar color.
I love a mystery!

I am sure most of us are very familiar with the story of how Resistol came to be - E.R. Byer and Harry Rolnick coming together in 1927 in Dallas to form the company (http://www.resistolhat.com/history.php), and that the Byer-Rolnick era continued into the 1960s, with the post-B-R transition eventually leading to HATCO. Recently the story of the end of the Byer-Rolnick era was shared with me by a family member was there and lived through it. I thought other Resistol fans might find it interesting as well.

By 1965, "Resistol" was a company under the Byer-Rolnick Corp., then-owned by Harry Rolnick. In 1966, Harry turned over the title of President of the B-R Corp. to his son, Maury, who had little interest in selling hats, and Harry remained Chairman of the Board. In 1967, Harry sold out to Koracorp, a California corporation, headed by Bill Dow, who was 32 years old and had never had manufactured or sold hats. The Resistol Co. President (a relative of Harry's) was unaware of the sale, before it occurred, but stayed on until 1969, when he accepted an offer from John B. Stetson to become its Executive Vice-President and COO. That was the end of any B-R influence at Resistol, which changed hands again (more than once) before coming under HATCO. Harry Rolnick died in 1977 at age 77 in France, ten years after selling out his company.
I have a Koracorp era Resistol Pecos 3X Hand Creased beaver. It has BR on front of sweatband. Haven't had it out in a while. it's a 6 7/8. Interesting I didn't really know it was that old. so it's 1967 until? When did it change hands again 69 or later? Sure I posted a photo of it on FL ~ a year ago.

Label: Felt Headwear by Byer Rolnick A division of Koracorp Industries Inc. it seems to suggest you could order them by the dozen & piece was $25 ea. So was Byer & Rolnick still producing the hats while it was a division of Koracorp?

This is the one. Price is good but I think the brim is 1 3/4. Not great for a sun hat & I'm not into Fedora's but would like to find a 2 1/2 in. Still it's cool & I agree early 60's. Not sure what kind of brown it would be. I'd prefer taupe but it could be a really warm brown. Hat band is a bit wild.

Resistol rode in today. Lovely cool neutral color SMOKE Model Carson 3 1/2 brim. Cool, smoke is sort of rare & Carson?
Looks like a cattleman type. It's 4X Beaver (2.3 +mm felt) but very velvety. Would date it late 70's - 1982. Great shape, horsetail band is smoking as a bonus & why I bought it & it fits!!! Needs a brim front back steam down. Sweatband is soft. Very pleased!

Color is much cooler & nicer than photo but hard to tell the silver belly types in monitor photos.

Grabbed this black late 70's to 83 Resistol 4X Beaver a few weeks back from the bay. Excellent condition Pre 83 late 1970's with 3 3/4 in brim. Have no idea of the model as the tag is gone. Looked like a Tycoon but the brim is wider.
Felt is over 2mm thick, velvety & pretty soft.

Could the Denver if the crown was reworked as that's a 3 3/4 inch brim from same Era.

Received the Smoke Carson 4X beaver yesterday. 3 1/2 inch brim & I need to get some steam on the brim to tweak.
Brushed out the horse tail & gave it a little no rinse wool wet wipe. Looks nice.

Here is a 5X Beaver Resistol with a 5” brim and 7” crown. Hat was very dusty with a flat brim but it cleaned up nicely and accepted a gentle curl with a bit of water and steam. No size tag but I was able to accurately guess it was a size 7 based on measurements provided by the seller.

These 5X Resistols always make fun project hats as the felt is workable and the creasing options of a 5x7 hat are abundant.

Looks to be a 1940 to 1950 Resistol in mint condition. I do not think it has been worn it has the original box and matching serial number it is so clean I don't want to wear it. It's a 3X Beaver with a sewn in red liner with stylized "O"
Is there anything I'm missing about this thing?

This is my beater. It's tough as nails. It's a br 15. The BR stands for byer-rolnick. 15 stands for the price it was sold for originally. It is one of the lightest hats I've ever worn and it's tough as nails. It's silver belly. correct me if anything is incorrect

Diamond horseshoe 15.
This is an unbelievable felt. Very stiff and very shape able. I've reshaped the crown into a telescope and back to how it is now and you can't tell. I think it's from the '70s, it has the original pin. The worst part is is that my head's just too big for this sucker.

Welcome to the lounge!

Great looking Ft Worth. It doesn‘t have the stylized diamond “O” so I think it dates a bit later than your estimate. Here is an example I posted upstream:

I'm late to the vintage Resistol western party, but when the price of Akubras pretty much doubled under the company's new management, I discovered that pre-owned, older 3X-5X Resistols are not only much more affordable, the felt is lighter, smoother and more workable.

The hunt on Ebay and elsewhere online is part of the fun. This Granite Quicksilver is my most recent find, and it was in excellent condition (apart from a brim bent out of shape a bit from shipping). Renovating the typical cattleman into a Roy Rogers double-teardrop was lots of fun -- before and after photos.

Might any of you Resistol experts know the open crown height of the Las Vegas model? I'm looking for something 6.5" and taller. Are there other Resistol western styles which are that tall? Thanks!
