An aperitif from my last bottle of the 2020 La Loma single estate agave harvest, Tequila Ocho Plata. Wearing a Stetson One-hundred this afternoon. When this bottle is empty I’m going to cry. By far the best harvest I’ve had.

The Camarena family own something like 47 agave fields; different climates, altitudes, soils, average daily temperatures, water, incline, etc. Experience has taught them that the best agave is harvested at 8 yrs of age; not younger, not older. So they harvest their various agave fields at that age. It turns out that the various fields of agave & the tequila they will produce are more akin to various grape vineyards & wines they produce, due to the variables listed above. A good sipping tequila blanco can be as varied & complex as the wine produced by a complex grape harvest, or the best Single Malt Scotch Whisky from one of the various regions (terrains) of Scotland. Therefore certain bottles from harvests are highly sought out.

I didn’t discover the 2020 La Loma harvest until probably 2022. By then the harvest was mostly sold out & limited to a few bottles found on shelves here & there. I have a fav liquor store owner who has his distributor sales rep searching back rooms & warehouses for old stock for me. I think I managed to come up with 7 bottles, this one being the last of those. Anything out there now will probably come in a trade or at great mark up from a private collector/individual (like the Frog Morten’s).

Since 2022 I have bought bottles from 8-10 other agave fields & harvests. Some were quite good also but not good enough to get me to buy cases & put away while still available. But my search will continue.

If you’re just after cactus juice then stick with Cuervo.

Tomorrow, Sat May 17th is World Whiskey Day. In this modern era of handcrafted Single Malt, Cigar Malt, Single Grain, Single Estate, Cask Strength, Small Batch, blended, Blended Malt, & Blended Grain Whiskies there is plenty to choose from. All meant to be enjoyed neat.

Wanting to buy a special bottle of something as a sipper for myself for Father’s Day. I’m thinking an Anejo just released from Tequila Ocho might be on my short list. Tequila Ocho says this has been aged 1 yr in wet Old Fitzgerald Bourbon casks from Fitz’s Spring 2023 10 yr old. There is actually 2 simultaneous releases by Tequila Ocho, one with agave harvested from Rancho Coralillos (seems to be most available) & the other from the Rancho Potrero Grande harvest. Both 96 proof with variations in taste between the two, due to the climates in which the agaves grew. Not being a big fan of Wheated Bourbon my concern is that the sweetness of Fitz might be overpowering but reviews say both Anejo’s are very much agave forward, my preference. So for now it remains on my short list & I have some time to decide. In total 3200 cases available. I would imagine collectors will buy them out quickly.

Busy afternoon... finished up a couple leather projects ( so I can get paid), and won a Borsalino like Ive been searching after for what seems like ages. I earned this one today! It WAS going to be an Old Fashioned but I accidentally turned a splash of OJ into a whole glass..and then dumped some extra cherry juice when I tied to scoop some cherries in. Oh well... its cold wet and tasty. Kicking back with a good old pipe and my old Moose River

Yesterday I enjoyed a couple of beers after work.

I tried out a Mr.Surley's Orange Whip. I picked it up yesterday at the liquor store. I was restocking my frig with Surley Supreme. It was a gamble as it sounds like a novelty beverage that it is to good to be true. Surprise! Not bad at all. The blood orange, vanilla combined with the oat malt give the taste of a Orange Whip in all the good ways and not the expected fake orange and sweet whippy taste of my fears. I will sample more thru the week (bought a six pack) to see if the taste continues. I did follow it with a Surley Supreme (braced with grapefruit and a tart taste finishing taste). It is a go to beer for me.

This morning I grilled some buffalo sausages and potato cakes while sipping a Purple Grain from Sturgis Brewing. This blond ale was tasty with a puree of blueberry, blackberry and raspberries. Tasty Sunday breakfast beer.

Cheers, Eric -
