An aperitif from my last bottle of the 2020 La Loma single estate agave harvest, Tequila Ocho Plata. Wearing a Stetson One-hundred this afternoon. When this bottle is empty I’m going to cry. By far the best harvest I’ve had.

The Camarena family own something like 47 agave fields; different climates, altitudes, soils, average daily temperatures, water, incline, etc. Experience has taught them that the best agave is harvested at 8 yrs of age; not younger, not older. So they harvest their various agave fields at that age. It turns out that the various fields of agave & the tequila they will produce are more akin to various grape vineyards & wines they produce, due to the variables listed above. A good sipping tequila blanco can be as varied & complex as the wine produced by a complex grape harvest, or the best Single Malt Scotch Whisky from one of the various regions (terrains) of Scotland. Therefore certain bottles from harvests are highly sought out.

I didn’t discover the 2020 La Loma harvest until probably 2022. By then the harvest was mostly sold out & limited to a few bottles found on shelves here & there. I have a fav liquor store owner who has his distributor sales rep searching back rooms & warehouses for old stock for me. I think I managed to come up with 7 bottles, this one being the last of those. Anything out there now will probably come in a trade or at great mark up from a private collector/individual (like the Frog Morten’s).

Since 2022 I have bought bottles from 8-10 other agave fields & harvests. Some were quite good also but not good enough to get me to buy cases & put away while still available. But my search will continue.

If you’re just after cactus juice then stick with Cuervo.

Tomorrow, Sat May 17th is World Whiskey Day. In this modern era of handcrafted Single Malt, Cigar Malt, Single Grain, Single Estate, Cask Strength, Small Batch, blended, Blended Malt, & Blended Grain Whiskies there is plenty to choose from. All meant to be enjoyed neat.

Thanks for the update... glad to see theres somethng to look forward to tomorrow. Wont be too upscale here... just a few bourbons and scotch. I feel a pipe and neat whisky session coming on!
