Anyone recently pick up a new Langlitz in medium black cow?

Might be just a hide variation but def more pliable and soft hand possibly thinner / lighter weight out the box compared to my previous 4 columbias in med weight black cow.

Emailed langlitz to ask if using a different leather or supplier and have not heard back…

I like that suit of armor feel (previous jackets) out the box but i also like this jackets comfort. I am torn here and wondering if anyone has had a similar experience

^^ I've had at least that many.

Also there's a good thread or two already on this subject if you do a search.

Every one is different. My Straight-zip, padded Columbia, sold to another member here now was made of rather thin leather, I just didn't like the leather very much. I still have one from 2012 (Padded 10-pocket in "quite heavy" leather ~ 11 lbs with the belt, a late 1980's 10-pocket non-padded Columbia in "exceptionally heavy" leather - over 10 lbs without the belt, and a straight zip 1990 still in nearly brand-new un-broken in condition that's slightly small on me that's 8.5 lbs and stiff.

I visited their store in July 2023 to be measured and the only explanation I was given for the trend toward lighter leathers was a lot of returns on the heavy items. Guess a lot of folks want the look more than the heft. My padded straight-zip Columbia made most of the lighter leather as still around 8-lbs, there is lot of leather on those especially around the waistband area of the Columbia. It will still protect you on a bike.

This is interesting and good to know. I thought it was maybe a fluke thing. I think my options would include returning for a refund and they would probably not make me another jacket ever as they did one remake for me previously, and that was a pretty big hassle… Or I could sell it outright and probably take a big loss. Beautiful jacket very comfortable. I just am more a fan of the thicker Leather and I like having to break it in. This reminds me more of schotts perfecto leather.

Now that’s a silly question!

I say give this jacket a chance to win you over before you give up on it, provided it fits well. I know that you and I have talked before about the challenge of getting a good fit from Langlitz (without a remake that is).
If this one fits well, then I would keep it for a while.
When I visited their shop in Portland, I was very surprised by how much I liked their goatskin. I liked it so much. In fact I would have bought the jacket that I tried on in that leather if the sleeves hadn’t been a good 2 1/2“ too long.

This might be an opton still for you.
If you call them, I have found it works a little better for communication and maybe they would make you another one in Goat, and you could send this one back. However I am not the one to make that call.

The straight zip (padded) was build in early 2024 so very likely from the same leather. It's the one I moved along, as you indicated, I prefer a thicker leather overall.

Considering the subculture I've since learned is their biggest market, I'm not surprised.

I wonder if they keep around beefy hides for people who explicitly say they want them or who will be riding.
If I understand correctly, they have phased out their heavy cow offerings because too many people couldn’t handle the weight and wanted a remake after receiving their order.

Wow, that’s too bad. I’m gonna just return this for a refund and be done. I’m not gonna ask them for a remake, might not do it anyways. Disappointed this did not work out. Will stick with my aero jackets for riding this summer. Little less mobility, but my police bike pretty much upright position. I may get another vanson stock model B for a beater/riding

Both Vanson and Johnson have a PNW style model that should deliver what you’re after.

Update: langlitz is taking the return really no issues so that is good.

Couple emails back and forth and yes I can also confirm they are using the same leather supplier they just adjusted the leather as most people were wanting something softer and more wearable. Too many returns on the good stuff. They do not offer the other. They say it is still 3-3.5 oz. Black medium cow just tumbled more or something. I would say my jacket was more on the 3 oz end. It also seemed different more than just being tumbled because my other columbias after sun, water, conditioning still did not feel anything like this new leather.
