Somewhere in there there is a Borsalino lobbia/homburg. Looks like this funeral hat will need the Lazarus treatment.

They should be reported to the hat police. Hope, like Lazarus, it can be resurrected.

Funny you should say that. I was just told my biopsies were negative for cancer. [emoji2]

Excellent news, Max. So pleased for you and your family. Now, if that kind of good news doesn't deserve celebrating with buying a new hat, I don't know what does [emoji6]

The "before" photos in the listing depicted a nicely formed hat, so it should be an open and shut case. That being said, when I received the tracking information and saw the dimensions of the package I started to have doubts. I can't say I was surprised to find it arrive in the condition I did. I think the lowered expectations combined with being at this for several months now has allowed me to just roll with the punches. I have little doubt this'll bounce back nicely after a little steam, a brush, and some shaping.

Looking forward to seeing it after it's been through some good old fashioned tlc [emoji4]

So glad to hear the good news Max.

Stetson Railbird, my second. The other one is gray.
Notice the triple stitching on the brim.

This WWII era Karl Misik (Kami) arrived today. I bought it off Alan, who originally got it via Steve's Czech haul back in 2015.

It has a very soft, grey heather felt which, by the feel of it, suggests some wool content.

It fits very nicely.

Steve has more info about Kami on his germanaustrianhats site.

I'm not as good a photographer as Alan, who is, but I hope I've done the hat justice.

Thanks as well to Alan for the Borsalino coffin box.

I survived 2 surgeries/biopsies for malignant melanoma. The first one came back positive. No more long hours in the sun for this young, cough- cough, man.

I worried a lot, too... like, how much and how deep are they going to have to keep cutting on this????

It is a horrible experience, isn't it, Douglas?

Second hat arrived today, and first, night and day difference in packing:

The hat was properly packed in a hat box and taped shut, then surrounded by moulded styrofoam (like new electronics), and placed inside this massive shipping box. Additional gaps were filled with loose stuffing. Hands down the best treatment I've ever seen, so kudos to the seller.

And now, for the hat:

Clocking in at a 4" brim it just meets @Joao Encarnado's minimum requirements, but it's easily the biggest in my humble collection. Stands 5" tall in the front at the base of the center crease, and sports a two-ply black ribbon. Haven't made my mind up on the feather but I'm actually leaning towards keeping it right now.

And now for moment of truth:

Brim is a little wonky and will need a bit of reshaping, but all in all I like it. Part 2 regarding the story associated with it to follow below.

Steve, Again great to see this one! It's definitely made of Wool but hard to describe. I am not sure any of these Karl Misik (Kami) will appear again especially NOS. They have a great look and I really enjoy mine.

(Part 2)

So I like hats that have a store or person's name stamped on them. I enjoy digging up the history associated it. Sort of gives the hat an extra dimension of character. It also serves as a reminder that the hat existed long before me, and with proper stewardship, it will have a life after me as well. I'm just the temporary owner at this moment in time.

Grady's in Jacksonville, TX was an independent shop that lasted roughly 30 years, from the late 40s until 1980. The only article I was able to find was actually written by a middle school student and archived by The Texas Historian, whose uncle happened to work there as a teen himself back in the 70s:

Grady Nutt was the owner. Maybe that name is familiar to some, but if you do a search you'll come up with hits for Grady Nutt, comedian, of "Hee Haw" fame. Well, he was actually Grady L. Nutt, son of Grady C. Nutt, hatter in Jacksonville, TX.

As a kid, I can remember lying on the floor under the table at my grandparents house while the adults played cards and watched "Hee Haw" and "The Lawrence Welk Show." I can't say I recollect any of Grady's bits from the show, but the connection struck me as interesting enough to go ahead and buy the hat. Tomorrow I head north for a small family reunion this weekend for all the grandkids. Not everyone will be able to make it, but there will be family coming from both coasts, and others I haven't seen in probably 20 years. Maybe I'll bring my new hat.

And that is that.

That is beautiful, and the 4" brim will provide some shade! It fits you well.

That is just so cool! I love hats with history, or a story to tell.
