I work in the law enforcement area- I'm a specialist police officer in a crime scene unit. This involves both office and field work. I usually wear odd jackets, like those above, with chinos, denim or jeans legwear to work. I try to keep a balance, with clothes which are practical but still allow for a smart professional image. I am in the "Crime Against Persons" squad (this is the literal translation), which includes homicide, sexual agressions and other serious crimes, so I have frequent interaction with judges, coroner office forensic doctors, etc, and I am often in front of the general public and the press, so I firmly believe image is important. Suits I reserve for court appearances or similar occasions.
Our dress code is very, very casual. I am the only one in the entire outfit who wears jacket and tie - or bowtie - every day, and this includes the higher ranked officers; a couple of them, in the top-ranking slots, wear suits, they having stricter requirements, but keep the tie in a drawer and use it only if in really in need...
The greater part of my ties and bowties are vintage, mainly 50's and 60's - I tend to narrow widths. Part of the jackets, coats, etc that I use are vintage, too, as are accessories (hats, caps). I do wear the hat TO my station and OUT of it, but not, usually, when actually working, because of practical reasons.

(Off-topic: I would be happy to hear any suggestions about hard-wearing cloth (both as referred to strength and as to soiling) suitable for suits, jackets or trousers. I would like to make more use of suits at work, but field work can be messy, hence these requirements for hardy clothing; I am considering ordering a couple of sports/casual-type suits made from such a material. Please use PMs for these suggestions. Year-round, spring-summer and fall-winter suggestions welcome!).

Torpedo, I think you look fantastic!
I'm a mechanical engineer working in the related software industry (engineering analysis software) and as no one ever sees us, we can get away wearing pretty much whatever we want. That being the case, any more I tend to dress for the possibility that I might need to go tomb raiding in the 30s after work. Someday it'll come in handy, I'm sure.

I've found that Naturalizer makes wonderfully comfy wedges and t-strap sandals that work for hot days. I think that all these styles of shoes lend a vintage feel to my outfit. I'm in the funeral trade...dark suit, white point-collar shirt, somber tie, black belt and shoes(lace up, no matter what), black raincoat and topcoat in yucky weather. Not real exciting...

this is a great thread, glad I found it and could read what all of ya are wearing to work in. I'm actively seeking a job, will be returning back into the work force after being a full time stay-at-home mom for the last 16 years. I'm hoping to find one where I can dress nicely every day, as almost all of my modern clothing is classic in style and/or for the most part V-I.
The BEST job for wearing able to wear my best and fanciest V-I clothes (and some vintage furs too) has been with me as a VOLUNTEER. This last year I worked as (unofficial title) Liaison between our church's (Venture Christian Church in Los Gatos, CA) Music Pastor and the Conductor of the California Pops Orchestra! www.californiapopsorchestra.org I basically in addition to that, also "took care" of the Orchestra and the guest artists as necessary when they were at VCC using our venue for their concerts. I wore an evening gown to each concert performance and dressed nicely for all the dress rehearsal nights too.
As a social ballroom dancer owning a (small) number of full length evening gown already, this was the PERFECT job for me! The attendees and musicians got used to right away seeing me very dressed up, and they appreciated my efforts. I did meet and greet of course at the concerts. The concerts at VCC were on Sunday afternoons- so yes I wear sequins and furs in the daytime! Our two children Sarah and Daniel ushered for all the concerts so they got to wear their fanciest and best outfits to hand out programs to attendees at the doors going in.

I wore vintage-inspired with vintage 40s hat at the Best of the Big Bands concert in April, hubby Chuck wore his vintage WWI Army Air Corp Captain's uniform. We danced in the aisles during the show to "Moonlight Serenade".

The same last concert Daniel wore a new but V-I ivory DB 2xsx4 dinner jacket with his tux pants, shirt and bow tie- unfortunately I have no pic of that outfit on him, as after the concert the jacket had strawberry fingered stains on it.

I work in fashion so yes and no. At the moment i'm doing CAD work for a company and the dress there is super casual so on a daily basis i'm overdressed but hey i'd rather be overdressed than underdressed.

I''m a therapist and I set my office up with a 1920-1930 look. Lamps, furniture, plants, rugs, clocks, mags, etc. Not so much that it looks like a diarama but comfy. People step in and slow down. The mailman bust in one day and stopped dead, "What sort of place is this?"
I wear khakis and plain shirts. I wear some P3 Shurons that fit in nice w/o looking like an extra in a movie.
It does set the theme for feeling OK and most of all, I like it.

I am a Process/MFG. Engineer. My occupation requires that I get my hands dirty, almost daily. Given the types of work that I must do, I nary expect decent cloths to survive the day without stain or damage. I wear dark trousers and a button down or, if I know I will be getting filthy, jeans and a cotton work shirt. When I wear the later, I appear as a USN sailor or a convict. My footwear consists of M1938 Service Shoes with a high polish or my old "veteran" Jump boots. My hats rarely enter the building.

Myself, I work as a manager of an accounting department for a big distribution company. Our dress code is "business casual", and like most California corporate offices the emphasis is on "casual". I don't wear ties, because it would come off as too affected. My daily wear is vintage 40's or 30's trousers and dress shirts (usually modern, but with the most retro cut and collars I can find). As it is, people consider my "look" to be pretty formal and I usually get compliments about how nicely I dress.
In the old days (that is, as recently as the 1980s), it was generally still expected here that that people wore ties and jackets to their office jobs. I miss those days... I think that there is more of an air of professionalism in the office when everyone has to dress like a grown up when they go to work.

I'm a student so can pretty much wear what I like. I'm training to be a teacher, so when I go on placement it gets more difficult. There is always the possibility that a child will scribble on my skirt or that I will trip over a rogue pencil and fall into a puddle of paint.
Then I try to dress "high street vintage". You know when some high up designer suddenly decides that such-and-such an era is going to be the big thing and it pops up in every high street shop. That way it doesn't matter what damage happens to my clothes.
I also volunteer in a charity shop and they're really casual on dress code. I can basically wear anything. I get a lot of compliments about my clothes in there.

I am a stay-at-home mama to a 20-month-old daughter and a 9-year old son, so most of my day is running after the little one and shuttling the big one to activities and school. We live in a wooded area and my daughter loves walking on the trails behind our house, so I'm tromping through woods daily, hanging wash on the clothesline, etc.. Right now, I generally wear cotton and rayon skirts and blouses--things that can be washed. If I'm at home, I'll wear Keds or mary janes. I have a small collection of aprons from the 1940's, with feedsack prints and rickrack trim and I wear them, too.
