WW1 Vintage plane flips on runway

Hi all,

I saw the following video on CNN and thought that I'd pass it on. It appears that no one was injured in this accident in Arlington, VA at the Ronald Reagan Airport during what appears to be an air show:

While I'm no expert on flying but it looks like the brakes locked up, and with the tail still off the ground, it just flipped over. Both pilot and passenger popped out and appeared unhurt.

My father trained in a Stearman. He's often told me that the plane was sweet to fly, but could be squirrely on the ground. Having logged time in taildraggers, myself, I can vouch that one has to be quick on the controls when landing a plane like this...lest he end up an embarrassing heap at the end of the runway. The aircraft's center of gravity being located well behind the main gear can make landing a taildragger quite the challenge.

Stains ;-)

The Stearman was a 1930s vintage biplane used as a trainer for USAAF folks in WWII ( I dated someone whose father trained in them, before joining B-29 crew flying missions over Japan).

Crash doesn't look so bad, stains on the seat might be hard to get out tho...

Hi Story,

Thanks for correcting me, I am not very familiar with bi-plane ID. When I looked at the video I figured that the crash wasn't so serious that the plane would never fly again but was amazed at how easy the accident seemed to happen. His landing looked pretty good to me until the end when it flipped. I figured that a new prop, tail and a good hard look at the wings were in order.

Since this is the forum to post *news* items.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for moving it to the correct forum. I wasn't sure exactly where it should go and thought that maybe the WWII forum was the best fit. Some subjects are hard for me to categorize (at least in my brain).... lol
