Women's Hats

I would like to see photo examples of women's hats somewhere on this website. Back in the day, both men and women wore hats. Nowadays, it's much more the men. I would especially like to see good fur felt hats on women and see what styles they can come up with, both vintage and modern. Everything you see for women in stores seems to be wool felt.

Ladies, I put a lovely vintage Stetson (size 22) in the Lounge Classifieds at no charge. Take a look over there to see if it's something that you would enjoy wearing.

The hat has now been claimed. Hopefully, we will see it worn soon.

Have a great weekend!

Hi,

I just joined and am looking for threads concerning hats for women, and this is the only one that came up in the search. It doesn't look like anyone is posting anything here for over a year. Are there more threads for posting and reading about ladies hats? Please direct me, thanks.

By the way, that sketch of hats by George Lawrence in the above thread used to be mine, I sold it about 10 years ago at a vintage show. I still have a copy of it saved somewhere. I had more of his sketches and have about 14 of his hats as well. He was also a Broadway dancer, who later turned to millinery and made hats for some famous stars of the stage and screen.

Welcome - Caramel Smoothie has a very large collection - it might be worth doing a search of her posts (she posts a fair bit in the 'Post New Hats here' thread).

Anybody? Shall I assume (uh oh) that there are no threads on this website concerning women's hats? Is there any interest in starting one to discuss that side of hat making? Maybe not? I know this is more of a site for mens hats, but there seems to be quite a number of women on here. I am new here, and I see there is a woman's side on the forums in the Powder Room, but I find no threads on woman's hats? Perhaps I am missing it? Thanks!

Greetings Madame Babette and welcome... if you do a google search with the keywords you seek and add "fedora lounge" you will come up with a few threads such as this one Looks like this forum could use some new content and to my mind you are more than welcome to revive one of these or begin a new thread on this topic.

Hello ladies and gents, I am a UK milliner so I make ladies hats but just starting to get interested in making men's hats too. I would be very open to discussion on ladies vintage hats, we don't have to stay in the Powder Room do we? I have a few, will post a pic or two when I get back in the shop.

Hello, I am potentially interested in this hat, which is described as being from the 1940s. The problem, as usual, is that it is a size 22 and I have a 23" head. Is size as important for this style, as it seems to sit higher up, or am I just engaging in wishful thinking? Would this type of hat be held on with a hat pin?

I'd be very interested in learning more about ladies' hats, and grateful for any information that you provide.

Alice Blue, I have the same problem, hats in general and vintage hats in particular are usually too small for me. I usually stick to caps/berets which are easier to stretch.
I think it largely depends on the style of the hat and your hairstyle. The hat you posted might be worn in a Jackie O. pill box style (which isn't 40s at all, but vintage anyway) on the top of your head, like this

In fact, I just bought a small hat that gives me the same problem; I'm so unsure of how to wear it. I might post a pic when my hair is neater than today ;)

This illustration from a 1943 Vogue pattern confirms that some tilt hats were indeed worn tilting forward, but I still don't understand how the ones without straps stay on. On the plus side, it looks as though size might not be a deal-breaker.

On the other hand maybe this style was supposed to sit firmly on the head:

How these stay up without a strap is a mystery to me, too.

Here are the hats I got at the thrift store.

(sorry for the low photo quality, I'm having problems with the lighting)

The red hat has a rubber strap, the black one doesn't. I have no idea how to keep it on my head.
I posted some more photos in this thread in the ladies' section.

Hairpins ... no magic! ;)

Very often there's a ribbon with small loops on the inside of the crown-opening - or small thread loops are sewn onto the inside of the hat - both to accomodate for the fastening with hairpins.

Well, yes. But this (black) hat has nothing whatsoever. I don't know how to fasten a hair pin to the hat, or how to fasten a hat pin to the hair. Maybe this kind of hat is meant only for updo hairstyles (then it'd be possible to fasten a hat pin / bun pin to the hair somehow, I guess)? I hope some ladies who are experienced hat wearers can answer this.
