And if you think theres something wrong with giving an industry billions in tax breaks while they're posting RECORD profits and you're grandmother can't afford to put gas in her car to go and buy life saving drugs she can't afford then you just gotta be un-American.

I'd give a lot to know if the kid really does keep up with things, or if his parents or an extremely biased teacher are training him to hate. It takes prodding to get a kid to loathe something like that.

I don't know. My parents are certainly far from flaky, but by 12 years old, I was already dissatisified with the world about me. No, I wasn't making plans such as his, but then again, Gerald Ford didn't seem so menacing to me as he who shall not be named.

As Baron Kurtz has evidenced, Brit youths were very anti-Thatcher and if you see news footage from '76 - '77 you can see some of the original punks, 12-13 years old, out there protesting her policies. Were their parents punks or anti-establishment? Highly unlikely. Was it just crowd mentality? Probably for most, but I'm sure there were a few out there who were independent thinkers. Some kids just are wise beyond their years, and by that I don't mean just booksmart.

I think we are going off track. Let us look at the original article again.. There is no need to discuss semantics. This is not about disaffected youths, Britan in the 70's, punks, rebels, etc. From what the short article pointed out, I would label this child as disturbed or a smart-a##. He simply states a "perfect day" involved doing harm to the President, Oprah, Walmart, etc... No free thinking, independent spirit phrases their desire this way. These are the words of a misguided child and should be treated as such.

The idea that the childs words have sparked digressions into Histororic forms of rebellion is interesting. An outsider could possibly construe that we agree with his nonsense? There are things in life that do not need to be deconstructed and analysed ad infinitum. Sometimes we must just say it is wrong. Most of us here prefer the "old days". Here is a situation where can can act like folks did in the old days. No coddling of the child. No sparing of the rod to spoil the child. Where we should stand up united in saying this is wrong, we are acting like a bunch of intellectuals of the 21st Century but putting his horrible words into "context". That strikes me as odd..

This discussion reminds me of the books they write about serial killers. The authors focus so much on the killers history, family, abuse, or incredibly mundane life that people forget about the victims. The words of a potentially violent child should not facilitate a discussion of adult rebellious proclivities.. These are two very distinct and seperate ideas. Sometimes Life is black & white.

Still, I'm stuck on the Waltons bit. I understand your reference to the government (I don't feel that our Federal or State governments have had _Americans'_ interests at heart for decades) and I despise Oprah and what she stands for. Having said that, why are you picking on a sweet (and yes, somewhat corny) TV show that focused on family, honesty, and integrity? The Waltons TV show was something of an anomoly back in the day, and certainly wasn't representative of the drek (think Starsky and Hutch, or Welcome Back Kotter) that was the standard fare of the 1970's. I'm not a Waltons fan... just confused.

Hmmm, we may just be pushing this one a little too far into the cerebellum.

Revolutionary spirit can be commendable. But really, Oprah is no Fulgencio Batista, no British colonial governor, and certainly no crazy old George 3. And Oprah is the one on his list that really, really surprises me. She is benign. Annoying, but ultimately harmless (in my opinion). She advises people to read some truly garbage books that should be burned. But this is no reason to kill her.

The secret service has to investigate every threat on the President, right?

It happens more than we are told..
I question how altruistic Oprah's intentions really are when it comes to her book club or giving away gifts to her audience.. It smells bad to me.

jamespowers, you are speaking about JamesFrey. I am up to date on this piece of b.s. because my wife is an avid reader and she bought this book before it entered Oprah's radar. I can vividly remember my wife telling me about Frey's drug fueled exploits. Then she tells me he kicked all drugs & alcohol without help! That was when I told her the book is a lie. Lo & behold, Oprah let herself be duped by this guy. This was even when Oprah's team had prior notice of Frey's potential con. Business is business I guess. I also heard Oprah had him on her show as a barter arrangement to have Jennifer Aniston on again. Apparently Jennifer Aniston owns the rights to Frey's book. You can figure out the rest..

Feraud, you are correct. That is the case I was thinking of but I didn't want to give that sap more publicity than the fifteen minutes he had coming.
For me the greatest measure of altruism is that taught by my grandparents---"If you give something to someone, walk away and don't tell a soul because that is the essence of charity. Striving for recognition of a gift/charity is not altruism it is advertising." They begin with the same latter so I guess that is what confuses a lot of people.

Geez! Oprah and daytime TV. I have found aboslutely nothing worse than being captive in a doctor's office waiting room while the TV plays that stuff. Cripes a couple weeks ago I thought I was going to crawl outta my skin it was so banal and lame. No wonder folks go postal. Aaaarrrrggghhh!!!
