Up here in No Calif. and often seen on evilBay, and on lots of reproduction clothing websites that 50s-80s clothing is usually referred to as "retro" not "vintage". No narrow definitions intended..:)

The range of people here at the FL encompasses that era as well as the more narrow definitions that people place on it for themselves. ;)

The definitions of what is actually antique, vintage and retro have be lost to the general public a long time ago. :eusa_doh:

Just remembered that one gut wanted to say memorobilia said memorophilia, which seems more like the fear of memorobilia.;)

I think I i might just do that, but it seems most vintage girls are much older than myself (17). I know I missed the USO dance at Cicada. I already have a gal in mind tho...( I was at Disneyland with that girl on that Sunday, shes a lounger as well.) We shall see it that comes to fruition.

The vintage scene here in my part of Nebraska is, well, sorta non-existent. No Art Deco Society or anything that I know of. Not even a reenactment group close by. Heck, I have trouble finding other people that like the era!

That's ok. I plan to spend lots of time in the history section at the bookstore. :)

I feel your pain. Wisconsin ain't really got a scene either. I try to hit up car shows in hopes of meeting the rockabilly hot-rod girl types, but no dice there either!

Wow... I have heard quite often the opinion that 80s clothing isn't vintage, but I have never heard anyone claim that 1950s clothing etc wasn't vintage before.
Arguably, vintage as a term belongs to the realm of, well, vintners. It used to refer (solely, I believe) to grape crops or wines made with said crops. Over the years, it's been co-opted to describe things old-fashioned, obsolete or out of date... presumably due to the fact that a wine's vintage was always some years old, and the best could be many some years old.

Retro, though I loth the term, is far more accurate to describe the stuff that interests us, by and large.

Obnoxious know-it-all comment out of the way... I couldn't agree more! Though I've recently realised that, at least where clothes are concerned, I can now be picky enough to go '49-and-older on everything =)

Agreed. We create subjective and shifting classifications for the term "vintage" with regards to clothing. [huh]

Without going back thru the thread, has anyone mentioned Movies in the Park or Shakespeare on the Green? I've lived in a few towns that have a version of these. Generally everyone who sits around you is in a great mood, being outdoors, and there is plenty of time beforehand to strike up a conversation. My city plays old movies in the park - so the theme is appropriate to bring out those who love something I do. Bring some good food or wine to share and maybe something will come of it.

My feeling with the whole dating thing is a bit weird anymore. Now when I date someone, I imagine myself 30+ years from now ... maybe fat, balding, wrinkly, going blind lol . Then I think of her at the same age. Can I possibly see us still interested in each other, having endearing conversations, holding hands on the porch swing?

To hell with beauty and sex and all that other fleeting stuff that is so common to those dwelling in their youthful indiscretions. What of the future? I want to be comfortable in love. I want to have that pitter-patter and warmth that comes from waking up every morning and falling head over heels for her all over again.

Beauty fades all too quickly. I'd much rather have a stimulating intellect and a caring heart to come home to.

Am I being too romantically mushy? Probably. And I realize its probably not realistic either. The woman I'm looking for (who's probably looking for me too!) is also someone I'm unlikely to meet.

I didn't even know there was a car show in town until I saw a lovely chevy going down the street. Then mom told me there was a car show that day, and she was going to wake me but she was too tired and went to bed instead. Which is a pity, I'd love to see them up close. I only ever see them on the road.

Vintage scene is non-existent here. In my city, I mean. Some boys wear fedoras, but they wear punk or gamer clothing with it. I don't dress vintage every day yet, anyway. I don't have a wardrobe yet... But I will. :) Then maybe I'll get the attention I want. But probably not here, maybe in another city.

My city does this on the Battleship North Carolina that is currently parked right outside the city. They project old films somewhere on the ship itself. I've never been....but apparently one year they screened Captain Blood!

Geography sure is a mess. It reminds me of that thread that was here some time ago about a "Fedora Lounge-ville" of sorts.

Where in Nebraska? Doesn't Omaha have quite a bit of Deco-era architecture? I can't quite remember, as its been a LONG time since I've been through there. The National Trust for Historical Preservation just recently had a lengthy article in their magazine about the unbelievable amount of Deco in Tulsa, OK and the number of groups there that assist in the background history, fundraising and upkeep. Perhaps there are groups in your area that do the same? There's always the chance to meet a wealthy philanthropist with an obsession for historical buildings. ;)

Similar values, a good amount of similar likes and maybe even dislikes have importance, it makes for less conflict and acts as a glue to pull two together. Then it's shared experiences, sharing a bit of an adventure always helps bring people together. The whole opposites attract is in reality not as true as the movies would have us think.

Unfortunately I too am one of those people whose concepts of the whole meeting dating thing is unconciously shaped by movies (alot of those silly 1950's & 60's ones too:eek: ) which tends to be not reality based. Throw in a little shyness too.

I go to many of the lounge events out this way ( as my budget can handle) and hope that it may lead me to that special someone. Same thing with church, I go to some of the district level events with a little side hope that maybe there I might meet somebody. These days when I get to feeling down about it, I do a all music night with my big stereo and spin a number of tunes to take me thru the mood.

In the end, I regain hope and wind up thinking of the silly pop song lyrics to a Monkees tune that was written by Neil Diamond - "I'm a Believer"

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me
Thats the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now Im a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
Im in love, Im a believer!
I couldnt leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a given thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.
Whats the use in tryin?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw her face, now Im a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
Im in love, Im a believer!
I couldnt leave her if I tried.
************
Silly love songs do have a use and now it's time to face a brand new day.

I went to the Shakespeare Festival in Boulder several years ago. Like just about everything else that doesn't involve sports or booze, it was nearly all women and the odd husband.

Yeah, John, but what happened to the requirement that she be accepted by Max the Wunderhundt??
