A Few Words from Behind the Bar....

Well, we didn't exactly cover ourselves in glory on this one, did we, folks? A significant number of posts have been pulled (over half the thread) in order to salvage the interesting content here. Let's all please be more considerate with regards to what we post in future: remember, modern politics are fobidden in these parts, and we try to avoid profanity. And, in general, behave like adults. Think twice, post once. And please remember that we are a global forum, with no one geographical territory assuming dominance or correctness.

Now let's try and give this another go.

Mods why are you allowing this thread to continue as it is?

There's one very simply answer to this question: we are moderators, and not editors. None of us are paid employees, all of us have other jobs in the real world, and we help to run this place in our spare time. Even if this were our "real" job, we would not (for both practical and legal reasons) be in a position to hunt down everysingle problem thread or posting and deal with it immediately. The sheer volume of content on here alone limits that.

If you come across a post or thread you find offensive or think may be in breach of house rules, the way to raise it to our attention is not to post on the thread (which can often only make thinks worse), but to use the 'report' facility to raise it to the attention of the moderation team. This will be more effective every time, as all of us will see the 'report' flag as soon as we sign in to the site, rather than waiting until we discover a post in a specific thread.

It's amazing how many fantasies and fictions in your discussions about USSR...sorry but it's true!, and especially today!
I do not understand why write - ugly utility, not beautiful, for cold weather only... if you do not know anything about the flight jackets of the USSR.
Flying jackets in the USSR developed how in the rest of the world - together with aviation.
First there was a leather raincoat "reglan", later a lot of leather jackets made in the USSR, and received by Lend-Lease during the war. After the war, there were five generations of leather intermediate jackets. There were also many kinds of heavy winter and light summer clothing flight jackets.

There certainly is a lack of information here in the West wrt a lot of that sort of Soviet kit... perhaps unsurprisingly so, given the nature of relation between the West and the East during the Cold War period, or even earlier. your photographs are great, really interesting to see thed real jackets rather than the "reproductions" we occasionally see here in the West, with nothing to really compare them to (For example, this Silverman's jacket is the only one I've seen - is it accurate in any way? https://www.silvermans.co.uk/collec.../russian-mig-flying-jacket?variant=4198089859). A lot of us would certainly appreciate it if you would conitue to post more information about them and help to fill in the gaps in our knowledge in much the same way as once we were enlightened by others with regards to A2s, MA1s, and so on.

P.S. And what does the cossacks and flight jackets? I do not see a single flying jacket on anyone!

OP expressed an interest in leather jackets from (Soviet) Russia more generally, not only flying jackets. Though this does raise a fair point in terms of categorisation - what make a flying jacket a flying jacket? Is the A2, say, more so than the civilian French cycling jacket that Hartmann wore when he flew with the Luftwaffe, or does the act of wearing it in flight make it a flying jacket?

Thanks Edward. I didn't realise there was a report function. I've only been posting via my phone recently. Good to see the thread back on track.

No problem. Ask, I will answer with pleasure, and share information. I also know a lot about flying jackets not only of the USSR. And yes, let's without politics and jokes on countries and nations.

Your phone version should have a symbol like three horizontal lines on the bottom left of each post... Click on that and you get various options, including the report function.

Eastwood what are the best places to buy USSR flying jackets?
In Russia it has always been difficult to preserve its own history. Russia is a complicated country. Therefore, say where the best place, is how to say - where there is a casino with a guarantee of winning))
https://www.avito.ru/ - this is like a Russian ebay
Search only in russian - шевретка СССР , летная куртка СССР, шевретка ВВС СССР
P.S. Look for jackets only without a vertical seam on the back - jacket before 1980-85!!! that later it's like G-1 after 1968 .. the leather the wrong, collar the wrong..

I have the black sheepskin bomber Style one with the Grey colour sheepskin and brown liner! It's AMAZING, such a rugged Jacket! It's slightly small but it's one of the best Jacket in my whole collection, honestly it's solid! You can pick one up pretty cheap if you are looking.

@arkadijs, @Eastwood,

Thanks for posting these awesome photos on this thread! It's great!
Recently I've been researching foreign pilots flying for the North Koreans in the Korean War, and for the Vietnamese in the Vietnam War, and I have to admit, I feel a lot of nostalgia for the Cold War compared to today's much more complicated era.
I'm really interested in these guys from over the fence, but I'm surprised not to see any 'mustachios' amongst them. It's my (limited) understanding that even Soviet pilots groomed impressive mustaches on combat duty.
Thank you guys!

Soviet pilots on vacation. Base in China, during the Korean war.

These photos are great. Interesting similarity to some European styles in there, too - I especially love this last photo with the long coats. Can'tg see any buttons - these look to me to be very reminiscent of the mod-20th century German leather coats of this cut that fastened with a leather belt only. I'd love to have one of those now!

Hello ladies and gentleman,

I'm new in town and am very happy to be here to hang out with you knowledgeable folks!
I have a big favor to ask. I'm looking for a Russian "shevretka" pilot's jacket made in the USSR. I am not interested in the modern replica. If any of you by chance come across one in a new or a very good condition, I'd really appreciate if you could hit me up to let me know! You can PM me please!
Thank you so much in advance!
