Sorry Jack, no avoiding it, your thread title really must have kept out a lot of people out who would be very interested in this discussion! I only noticed the thread today because I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve just seen a newspaper feature on this ?¢‚Ǩ?ìNick and Jessica?¢‚Ǩ? - I had never even heard of them before. When I saw your name attached I was instantly curious as to why you would be interested in what sound like a pair of talentless mediocrities. But enough of them.

Coming from Senator Jack, I find it hard to believe that anyone would think he posted that title in a serious context.

I'm bewitched, bothered and bewildered. I've read insulting comments on these posts but I pretty much think "What a schmuck" and let it go at that. Then I read another post by the same person and think they are a pretty square guy.
There is a chance that some of the people I feel are loud-mouths would be great to sit and talk with as long as we avoided certain topics.
I enjoy everybody in the Lounge but I have to admit, not having certain comments said to my face makes it easier to take.

the point is that it doesn't make it clear what the thread is about. I doubt if many of us have to time to check the content of every new thread that pops up so it helps if the title makes the specific subject matter clear.

Here's an idea for us all to mull over. It's fairly obvious really, but no-one seems to have suggested it yet. Maybe we could establish a rule that threads can be as political as you want but must have some relationship to a mid-20th century or vintage/classic clothing issue?

I didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t see the disputed ?¢‚Ǩ?ìgentleman?¢‚Ǩ? thread but I would have thought that it met those criteria. On the other hand the recent thread about Michael Savage didn't strike me as having any relevance to this site, unless its ?¢‚Ǩ?ìhow not to be a gentleman?¢‚Ǩ?. I single this one out precisely because it wasn't a particularly obnoxious or aggressive discussion ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú but it clearly had no relevance to the core concerns of this site.

Those who want a good old political set-to could still post things like "Leon Trotsky was the greatest mind of the 20th century" or "Adolf Hitler has been much misunderstood". Or, even more relevant, "was the decline of good menswear caused by the capitalist clothing industy or hippy tree huggers?"

To the contrary, Night, I'm going to have to argue that the title is exactly what the thread is about: insipid conversation in these times. I simply didn't realize that people would pass over it, for I thought most members like Steve (Thanks, Steve!) would instantly recognize the sarcasm in it. I know if Matt Deckard entitled a post 'I bought a pair of acid-washed jeans today' I should be positive he were up to something.

But for a passed over thread, we did get many posts and opinions, and I believe the most valuable has been that of LaMedicine:

As many of you realize, outside of the US, the country's policies are rather unpopular at the moment, and people tend to judge Americans in general by what their government/administration is saying and doing.
So, for me, it has been interesting to follow the political discussions, and realize how diverse in truth everyone's opinion is. It is refreshing, and reassuring as well that there are both push and pull, and center as well. That not everything is as we would see in the media, and journalism would have us see and believe.

The non-American members do not realize how frustrating it is to be lumped in with the boorish, gluttonous, overbearing America that presents itself to the world. If forums like this are starting to crack that image a bit - even a tiny bit - then I'm doubly for keeping these debates alive.

I missed the gentleman thread as well, it sounds like it was exciting!

Please don't worry, I think most non-Americans who are not themselves boorish, gluttonous, and overbearing do realise there is another America, though it does seem rather beleaguered these days. Being English I fully understand having to take the world's flak for the misdeeds of your masters - in our case it's frequently our masters of long ago as well, a very frustrating cross to bear.

Marx was a great admirer of capitalism. Clearly he was very well aware of its problems but he considered it a great improvement on what went before. In fact one of his criticisms of Anarchism and other forms of socialism was their tendency to romanticize the pre-capitalist and pre-industrial past. He was equally critical of socialists who advocated social ownership through equalizing private ownership via peasant and small craft proprietorship, or who flirted with proto-fascist movements like Bonapartism. In fact he doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t seem to have had a lot of time for anything except capitalism and his own version of communism.

However, like most people my knowledge of Marx does tend to be mediated through Marxists, and I am aware they frequently distort his ideas and also censor the more emabarassing bits (like his occassional racism).
