The other day, Little Caesar; then, Battle Cry, from 1955, which turned out to be a two and a half hour Technicolor CinemaScope soap opera. WW2 shows up at the end, but most of the movie was guys and gals working through some relationships. Think of Magnificent Obsession meets All That Heaven Allows meets about ten minutes of Sands of Iwo Jima. With Raoul Walsh directing you thought might be epic, and there were parts that seem as though Walsh was channeling John Ford, but it was more cri de coeur than cri de guerre.

Last night I suffered through 300: Rise of an Empire, which is a mess and historically misleading (Greeks fought in a phalanx, people!).

Battle of the Somme (1916)... the 2005 UNESCO version that's on YouTube now. Perhaps it's because I've done so much research in that particular period and that event but I found it evocative and, frankly, depressing. Very striking, especially for a 98 year old documentary.

And, like James, it'll be Sharknado 2 tonight. Pesky fish!

The Fly (1986)

Seem to have forgotten how utterly creepy and
disturbing but yet how entertaining the remake was

The Landlord (1970) Beau Bridges, Diana Sands, Lee Grant, Pearl Bailey and Louis Gossett, Jr., Susan Anspach, Robert Klein, Marki Bey, Trish Van Devere and Hector Elizondo. Directed by Hal Ashby and produced by Norman Jewison.

It aired last night on TCM. I had not heard of it before, but it's a damn good movie. And, to me, a lot of it was very funny. Though, I wouldn't classify it as a comedy, at all. It has a lot of depth to it.

Also, it was shot on location in New York City in 1970. So, you have all of that great background.

This morning, I checked out the current rating for the movie and looked to see what critics thought about the film at the time of it's release. It was all positive.

Edward, My Son from 1949 with Spencer Tracy, Deborah Kerr, and a good many others. From a play by Robert Morley. Director George Cukor stayed true to the stage origins with several long takes featuring two characters reciting their lines (although some dialogue exchanges seemed semi-improvisational). IMHO, overall, a non-uplifting movie.

Sharknado the Second One. I had to laugh at all the references to previous movies like Airplane, the episode of the gremlins on the plane's wing Twilight Zone episode and a few others---at least better than the first one.

No chit "non-uplifting". First and only movie I ever saw Tracy play a serious heavy in. Wrong in every count... a recalcitrant swine of the lowest order. Still an interesting and entertaining film if you don't throw something at the screen.

I saw the last twenty minutes and the first twenty minutes and thought that it was somehow worse than the first. It seemed to be a parody of the first one more than a movie. Normally, Asylum movies are dumb on their own without trying. Sharknado Two purposely was dumb as was obvious with their lame usage of guest stars such as Ripa, Strahan, Lauer, and others as shark killers. I did find the Airplane and Gremlin on the wing reference to be entertaining.

A coworker and I discussed the possibility of a Sharknado happening here, and determined we were too far from the ocean to have one.
However, we ARE close enough to a large river, making the possibility of a Catfishnado a real threat.
In the event of such a danger, I've prepared our house with oil, and fish batter.
It's our only hope.
