What to wear with a fedora....

Choices, choices and choices. I say wear the hat, do not let it wear you. I wear my fedoras/homburgs/caps with lots of country/city attire. In my mind I see it works. Lots of "don't be stupid rules" that do not need recounting as they are obvious decorum, social mores.

I wear a cousin of Michaels casually.

Check the thread - http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/what-hat-are-you-wearing-today.19520/page-6238#post-2205072 and see what is showcased daily. No pretense or posers as the posts are done daily by "regulars."

Early in this thread (several threads combined) I posted " Granted I am a an older guy and feel freedom from peer pressure and social pressure to choose my costume as I wish." This freedom has allowed to really enjoy wearing my hats.

Wear them in pride, Eric -
It also helps greatly to have good taste. You obviously do.

This question arises periodically and to me Eric always has the most appropriate response. Most who post on the WHAYWT thread could not care any less about what others think of their hat choice and what they choose wear with it. For me today it's my typical uniform of boots, jeans and a western shirt, along with the hat choice for today. A casually worn Homburg. Thanks for the inspiration, Eric.

Eric (@Short Balding Guy ) and Greg (@Bamaboots ) , personally I dig your style , and if I could find "The Hat" , I would be on it like a bad habit . I like seeing casual style wearing a Hat that is considered a Dress Hat . And it can still Dress Up . Greg , cool whisker transition , too . It's great to be yourself and not worry about what others think . But I like it . Killer Hommies . Matt @mmbarnes wears his well , also , dressed up and down .

One of the reasons I joined was to get info , learning about what I like . Eat the chicken and spit out the bones . And met and make friends with like minded folks , and be open to new ideas .

Bob (@Bob Roberts) , I tried and hoped you would dive on that Sweet Homburg . My search continues , you have a bunch , but there's always another . Didn't Bond have it for sale ? I know he had one that was a looker . I was looking .

I still am reluctant to wear a dressy hat such as my Borsalino Savoy, a beautiful charcoal grey hat with a dark blue wide ribbon, with a western shirt, jeans, and boots. Then I remember Bogart's Fred C. Dobbs:

True, his lid has seen better days, and is a LOT more worn than any of mine. (Maybe I should stick a few matches into the ribbon on one of my hats . . .?)

Well said that man, couldn't agree more. I saw this pic and thought, that hat, worn like that, looks like a lampshade. But the wearer just looks "right." Good for him and shame on me.

I live in LA where it doesn't get all that cold.
However, a jacket is required during some of the winter months.
My favorite is a brown leather bomber jacket I have had for some twelve years.
But...the jacket and a fedora combo launches the Indiana Jones reference time and again. It gets old, no?
So suggestions are welcome. Pix even better.
And, yes, I have a trench coat but normally only wear it in San Francisco when I visit my son.
Thanks, as always.

I will give a big +1 to the jeans and fedora! As most have posted already though, I try to keep it to a collared shirt.
+1 Jeans, sure, though I prefer the thin-ribboned Stratoliner/Open Road configurations with those. A wide ribbon just seems a bit more formal to me (though of course Prof. Henry Jones Jr. would have something to say about that). But, please, no T-shirts unless the hat is truly a Western.

Thanks Gents, very informative and reassuring. I'll do a bit of shopping, and surely will end up on eBay (I spend way too much time and money there already, what's a little more? :D).

I'll also get by Henry the Hatter (maybe tomorrow, heading downtown in the morning), though I already am pretty certain of my hat size. And I do love vintage things (including fountain pens!) and saving money, so eBay sounds like a great source. I also seem predisposed to "collecting", so hats seem like a natural there. Looking forward to picking up a few, I am guessing pictures are welcomed? ;) Will post when I come up with one (or two).

In the meantime, I need to spend more time reading around the site. I know a very few basic brands, but not names of different styles and other terminology. I'll have a bit of a look around!
That was how I got into this. Did a search to find the kind of man's hat Nicole Kidman wears in the movie Australia, and wound up here. Come to think of it, there's the Campdraft available from Akubra that would certainly fit the jeans look --

Hi all, new member here, first time poster. I have a question for the forumites about matching, since I have no fashion sense. I have a tobacco colored coat, which is sort of dark tan, and I wonder what colors of hats might go with this coat? Something of the same type color? I do have a tannish fedora. Would a black go with it? How about dark grey? Any other colors? How about a black coat? Black hat? Thanks, and sorry for all the color questions, but I couldn't find these specific ones in my meager attempt at a search, so perhaps it will help someone else as well.

It depends a lot on what type of overall outfit you're trying to put together, and how formal or casual it is. Generally speaking, avoid getting a hat in a similar colour to your coat, unless they match really REALLY closely. If they are similar but not quite a near perfect match, it will look quite wrong. If you were to wear a tan coat with, for example, dark grey trousers, you could go with a dark grey hat that doesn't match as well, because there's a lot more distance between your hat and trousers. A good thing you can do is to match the colour of the hat to your shoes - black shoes with black hat, brown shoes with brown hat. Really depends what sort of outfit you're putting together as to what colours are appropriate though. You can probably find endless videos on youtube that talk about colour and pattern complimenting in outfits.

Agree with the dark grey hat. But would avoid black. I also prefer hats with contrasting ribbon colors. After all, one can not be afraid of color.
