Ok, I have this hat that was not recieving much love, even though the felt and color are simply wonderful, AND it is a thin ribbon OR clone......and I really like my thin ribbon hats. I grab it to go out the other day and the wife says: "I really don't like that one on you".....:rolleyes: Here is the offending hat!o_O View attachment 165876
Then after two days I have an epiphany....I.....yes, I .....really do not like it either!:rolleyes:
And NOW I know exactly why! It was the CREASE! As a rule, I do not like what is now often refered to as a "Cattleman/Rancher" crease......even the hand done ones are just too......well.........too sterile! Just like a factory pressed crease, they are just too perfect! Not to mention they seem to make ANY hat....dare I say it.....Western:eek:.
AND that is the general reaction of most anyone really......even when worn with the brim snapped down. SO........I went to work......and found the felt was so very nice I did THIS in less than 10 minutes......AND......get this......it is a DRY CREASE!:rolleyes::)
Now, BOTH my wife and I, like this hat!!:):):) As we SHOULD!:D

That's a helluvan improvement, Mark. I agree about the cattleman's crease, too.

Here is my recent Wormser acquisition after a quick run of the fingers (yes the felt is just that nice). It is kind of a signature wonky crease I like on these hats.....

Well, I like to do kind of wonky creases in my hats with a good amount of crown. This Wormser has a 6 inch crown with awsome felt...a couple of minutes of finger work made this.......this question mark kind of crease is starting to become a signature of sorts.......though I wear a lot of differant creases really.

Finally was able to find & win a big Akubra Territory with two hats in mind for a conversion.

I've always admired this hat Tim made back under his Cane Rod Maker name. Sorry I don't recall if it was made for a Lounge member or not. I think the Territory is a good candidate. I'll see for sure when it gets here.

Always wanted to replicate this planters hat that pre-dates & was worn thru the Civil War by a General (Beauregard?) now in a museum. The more I have thought about it I think the crown would be too low for me to wear.

I like that Akubra, HJ! It looks really good just the way it is. It kind of reminds me of my Stratton conversion...

Before: a too small 7 1/8...

After the conversion with its reblocked 7 1/4 open crown and with the brim flanged

I like that crease! To me, it looks like a question mark. I don't know you, so I won't make any assumptions about you, but if I had that on my hat, my wife would think it appropriate for me!!
Well, I have made a few creases like it.....I had not really thought about it, but someone here noted it looked like a question mark too...(on one of my other hats)......and well......yes it does!
And for me too.......it is appropriate!;)

Thanks TJ. As creased the crown is only 4-1/2" & rakes bad to the rear, & the 4" brim has too much of a packer draw front & rear, but it's an Outback style hat. I'm wanting more of an American big brimmed planters style hat; an outdoorman's hat. When you push it open & take the packer out it's a 4x6. I've just threw a couple of things at it so far to see what I like. Wish I had a shackle for a curl. Need a wide ribbon that covers the smaller grommet & comes up to just below the larger grommets. It's a work in progress.

It takes great felt to accept a crease like that. I too like the wonky and organic look.

Very cool, Mark. The Penney's Marathon you've sent me has a tendency to do the same. What have you been teaching these felts?

Well, it was part of my extra fine and awesome "hat gang" for a while.............perhaps the other hats allowed it to wear their mark........that Marathon IS an awesome hat you know!;)

'50s era Stetson No. 1 Quality Western that I sized up from a 6 5/8 to a 71/4 sometime back. It now has a reshaped 3 1/4 inch brim and the crown is creased to my preferred Teardrop. Couldn't reuse the original stuff on the hat after the size up, obviously.

Before: Cattleman crease with a four inch brim. Way too small for me...

After: needless to say, I lost brim width going up five sizes.

I got this 3X Stetson a few weeks ago, and the sweat was actually peeling. So took to the local hat store for a new sweatband. Got it back today. I had originally done a square on the crown, but wasn't satisfied with it, so brought my stuff to work with me today, and after I picked the hat up this morning, re-shaped the crown. I think I like this better.
