Use a piece of 1/4" or 5/16" cloth clothesline rope (not the nylon stuff). The smaller the diameter of the rope will produce a tighter gap. You might want to look at 3/16". I don't do tele's but I use 1/4" for tight crease lines. You only need about 6-8" lengths, you won't need a full circumference. Just work it around to complete the circumference pinching tight primarily from the inside of the crown. Just keep going around working to get everything round & smooth. If you pinch from the outside you will get some puckering. When satisfied just remove the rope & leave to try.
Wet the crown with hot distilled water until you get that putty like texture. When I get close to what I want I usually work my hats sitting on a glass carousal plate from an old microwave. You can turn it around without disturbing what you have. Leave to dry.
