What is pony hide leather like?

Came across an Ebay listing for a pony hide jacket from Japan. Was my first time hearing about pony. How does it feel and age relative to 'standard' leathers such as cow and horse? Is there anything special about it? Also, is it common in the US, or more common in Japan?

I would love to say that it is the same as horsehide but the answer isn't simple. It always all comes down to tanning.
Basically, it can be processed to be exactly the same or completely different.

Tanneries might treat it somewhat differently as it is a more exotic leather so while it might appear different than horsehide (that you are used to), the difference comes from tanning, not leather itself. So the answer to how it looks, feel and would age applies only in comparison to similarly tanned horsehide.

To all your intents, constructions and purposes, you should consider it comparable to horsehide.
