Nein, mein Liebling ... it's the Germans who brought massive beer consumption to the rest of us, and I'm grateful for it.

I'm half Austrian and I drive a Mercedes-Benz Diesel. It's 24 years old and has over 300,000 miles (over 500,000 km) on it. I guess the Germans are good at a few things. ;)

oh not just a few ;)

We should start a thread for this

Asking what extraction our American members are. I'm mostly Austrian, but it's Tirol, on the Italian border. Also German, a little French.

[QUOTE="Doc" Devereux]Don't play down Australia's role in that, Benny! ANZAC, the RAN and the RAAF have certainly done their part through both World Wars, Malaya, Korea and Vietnam. Darned fine men, the lot of them.

Sorry, it's taken me a while to respond as I had no 'net access yesterday!

I agree totally with you there, Doc! I was thinking more, though, of America's post-1945 role as more of a leading nation in defending the principles of liberty and democracy. The U.K., Australia and many other nations, as allies and fellow believers in those principles, have always been there to fight alongside the U.S.A. in conflicts where our shared values have been threatened. I was just thinking in terms of how the underlying American belief in the value of liberty and democracy has shaped the United States' foreign policy over the years.
