A Snowy River arrived today, I’m going to try to get it cleaned up and reshaped. It had a braided leather hat band STAPLED on. Like not bent in, just staple points sticking through the side of the hat! Whoever wore this was tougher than me. Still has the original thin grosgrain band.

I don’t think the grosgrain is original. At least I’ve never seen a Snowy River with grosgrain.
Here’s mine…

Went with a short telescope with a front pinch, and a curled brim with a front pulldown and mild side lifts.

A family friend brought a family hat over for a little refurb. A nice sort of light moss green 70's Stetson Open Road. In decent shape but pretty dirty. Wind cord and button intact. Almost looks like it got drizzled or sprayed with something sticky and then dust accumulated. I got it stripped down, did some spot cleaning on the bad spots and got it blocked to smooth and work some wrinkles out. Brim and binding is in good shape. Ill give it a good gas bath tomorrow. The liner is pretty clean but I DO believe this one will be getting a new leather sweatband lol ( came apart in about a dozen pieces). ANY time I get the chance to get rid of one of the fake leather sweatbands on a decent hat I take it.

Got the Open Road stripped down for a good gas bath. Blocked it up overnight and Ill say it looks lots better. RIbbon binding cleaned up fine, but the hat ribbon had stains that woolite wouldnt touch. Ill just plan for a new ribbon

Gone from a $2000 fouquet to a $200 brand new hat

In all seriousness though this transformation is incredible! Can’t wait to see it with the new ribbon treatment

Got a new toy in today all the way from England... a Large Guy Morse-Brown brim curing tool ( already had their 1/2" tool, but this ones a full 3/4" curl... evidently NO-ONE here in North America has the bigger ones for sale, so I ordered direct from them). Have a couple of 4 and 4-1/2" brim westerns laying around that I bought cheap solely to practice brim curls with. Cant wait to play with it.... these tools work sooooo much better than my wooden curling tools. I just need to get a cheap hot plate or gas burner to heat the iron part up for use... I discovered that my smoothtop stove wont stay turned on when its on top of the burner area.

Full restoration for a nice fella on Instagram. Old Miller Bros. Cowboy hat, didn’t have the original sweatband, so not much info. Had to get me one of Rick’s brim curlers, lol. They really do work great.

Got a beat up Akubra Stylemaster for fairly cheap on eBay, no sizing info, but it magically fits! No idea what happened to the sweatband, looks like something took a bite out of the back seam. Gonna do a full refurb. Akubra uses a wire in the sweatband evidently, it was bent in a few places so I pulled it. And was eventually able to get a nylon reed pushed through. Working on a repair for the rear seam now.

Always thought a Stylemaster with the wire removed and perhaps replacing the leather sweat with a fabric one would be a comfortable and stylish knock around hat. fold it up and stick it in a pocket... way better than a bucket hat

Not a bad thought, I’ve been looking for a hat to do something similar to that. I like the red Resistol fabric bands, not sure where to find that type of material, but it’s definitely a refreshingly cool band on the head in hot weather.
