What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

A few months back I bought a 1936 Ford pickup and have been busy getting it where I want it. Much like these old hats, quality hotrod parts don't come cheap and that old pile of parts needed just about everything. Finally got Sally squared away and bought my first new lid in almost 3 months !!

Here she is in all her glory !! I fabricated the visor myself out of 22 gauge steel & 3/16" round stock. Not bad for an old hillbilly I think. Lol.
Of course I couldn't stop with just ONE hat after almost 3 months...
Here's a Sovereign Stetson Twenty in suede finish that I got for a song...only paid 40 bucks due to a couple moth nibbles that are hard to see when I'm wearing the hat so no big deal to me.

Some fine new acquisitions, Tim. I think that Sovereign will settle in quite nicely in Rock Bottom.

Very nice hat with style. What are the dimensions, if you know?

Apologies Jack. I missed your question. The Dobbs Rainbow is 5.5" in crown height, 2.5" in brim width.

Stetson OR. (gray). I stacked the OR on top of a plastic liner protecting the Stetson Stratoliner I wore earlier that morning. Out of curiosity I took some comparison pics.

The Strat is on the lft and OR on right.

Today, I am wearing a black Homburg by Scott & Co of London, England that I picked up from my good friend Paul John Murphy, founder of the PJ Murphy and Son hat company located in the UK. Although no one knows exactly what year Scott & Co started, records show they were active in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I believe Scott & Co were acquired by Lock & Co in 1969. After acquisition, their name appears less often; Locke & Co seems to have absorbed or subsumed some of Scott & Co’s business, though how completely or in what form is not entirely clear from the sources I found. They were based at No. 1 Old Bond Street, Piccadilly, London. Scott & Co's craftsmanship was considered high quality, and they were among the more prestigious hatters in London. They held a Royal Warrant as evidenced by the sweatband found here. The sweatband says “Hatters to H.M. The King” so this Homburg was almost certainly made between 1901 and 1952. The address line on the sweatband (“1 Old Bond Street, W” vs. “W1”) also help date refine the date range. Postal district codes were updated in 1930s London so the “W” here would indicate earlier manufacture. However, the label inside the sweatband says "W1" which leads me to believe this hat was manufactured somewhere in the 1930s around the time the postal codes were updated in London. Moreover, the “Hatters to H.M. The King and The Royal Family” found on the inside label often appears on hats around the George V / George VI era, which is consistent with my conclusion that this Homburg was manufactured sometime in the 1930s.
